How do teams like Detroit and New Jersey continue to sign all-stars at every position? Detroit is like the Yankees of the NHL. It's getting old seeing them in the Finals just about every year. There doesn't seem to be a great level of competition like there is in the NFL where no one can come close to predicting how the season is going to go. In the NHL you could put a thousand bucks or so on Detroit every year to make it to the finals and 9 times out of 10 you'll win.

Quick, before the 07-08 season when was the last time Detroit made the finals? 01-02. Where is Detroit this year in the western conference standings right now? 10th. Yes, Detroit is a consistently good team and had a dynasty-esque run with the Russian 5 back in the mid-late 90s but they're not in the finals 9 out of 10 years. Just like the Pats in the NFL or the Jordan Bulls in the NBA, there are teams that will be consistently good due to good GM moves. The NHL is no different than any other salary cap league, period.

Meant that you'd have a high chance of winning when I said 9 out of 10. Didn't mean 9 years out of 10. Really it's 5 years out of 10. So you'd have a 50% chance of winning. Which is a higher percentage than any other team of the last 10 years. Im sick of Detroit. Im tired of hearing about them all the time. Im tired of hearing about the high profile guys they keep signing. Im tired of the media always picking them to win the Cup.

01-02, 07-08, 08-09 is 5 out of 10 years?

What big name free agents did they sign last year? Todd Bertuzzi? They got beat up in free agency this year. They signed Hossa to a 1 year deal in 08, the biggest name they signed in 07 was Brian Rafalksi, no one important in 06 while losing Yzerman and Shanahan. There's no logic to your posts.

Who cares if ESPN picks them to go to the cup? They're sitting in 10th in the conference and 3rd in their own division while lowly Phoenix sits in 4th out west. Did anyone see that happening? Hell no.

I get that you don't like the Red Wings, and that's ok. But just say that instead of saying the NHL system is broken when clearly it is not.

Plus its not like KOVALCHUCK + DEVILS 4EVER LOL. It's a rental. And if they want to sign him long term, they're going to have to give up talent elsewhere to have the room.

It's a rental. Simple as that. Happens every year. I believe a certain percentage of the salary may not count against the cap this late in the year, but I could be completely offbase with that and it may be 100%. They trade salary in the NHL, similar to the NBA anyways.

Detroit is one of the most well run professional sports franchises in the world. If you hate them, I guess I can see that, but I respect the hell out of Holland and his organization. Talk about setting the bar.

Lots of cheap talent can be found if you draft well and poo. You don't have to spend a fortune to have a great team anyways.

Once the trade deadline passes, your team can go over the salary cap. The Pens did that with Satan last season, left him on the AHL roster until the trade deadline passed and then brought him back for the playoffs.
