Tom Talks: Adults shouldn't ask for autographs

Anybody, adult that is, has something they love to do. So to criticize another one of doing the same, is flat stupid, and you need a time out!

Kids, always have first dibs, and that goes with anything. I don't care if it's at a free kool-aid give away, lemonade stand, harlem globe trotters game, training camp, whatever..............the kids come first.

But for a grown man to criticize another grown man's love of a sport, or athlete is just stupid.

Grown ups are supposed to know how to handle business, and have better access to getting what they need or want than a child. I'll never push a child aside to get an auto just because I want it, even if it means I don't get it.

Responsibility, character, principles, and morals are all it's about. If you don't have them, you don't need the auto, nor do you need to deprive a young child of it either by being a selfish ass.

see above.

no user on this forum is without a sense of humor that i've seen, but a few are missing their sense of irony.

;)

I saw your comparison of people seeking autographs to people posting here. I have no clue what the connection is.

i get mine when the player is doing an "auto session"- if not, i buy them and get certified authenticated auto's.

that way they will maintain their value.

Most in person autos are worthless unless you have a great COA...I bought a huge lot a few years ago and it had a Dan Marino auto in person card no COA sold on Ebay for $6.00 a real COA from Upper Deck would have got atleast $50

i dont like when people get autographs for the soul purpose of selling them but being a passionate fan is an emotional thing not logical (except in the case of the panthers who are the only logical team to cheer for ever) so it doesn't need to make sense. And that feeling doesn't change with age. you dont "mature" out of a fiery devotion to team and its players. Now if i saw brett favre i wouldnt ask for his autograph just because he is a HOFer. id be more likely to ask keydrick vincent

If the Lord Jesus Christ himself, or the Pope, Virgin Mary, or any other religious figure told me it was bad for an adult to ask for an autograph of a beloved sports figure.......then I'd just have to go straight to hell, and pay for the first class ticket doing so. ;)

But what, really, is the reason for getting someone's autograph? Is it a proof that you have made contact with someone special? Is it a touch of grace from a celebrity to one of the "little people." I mean, Queen Victoria wore each of her pairs of stockings only once each and then had them handed out to her subjects as tokens of their admiration (note "their" not "her" admiration.

Is this any different? As a kid, there's a huge "Gee Wow, look who I met factor! One that can actually raise their status among their circle of friends, just for having stood in the presence of a celebrity/athlete. But as an adult?

As a 40 year-old man, do I really need a 25 year-old football player's autograph to validate me in any way? Or will I really get any enjoyment in it? Does it prove some kind of man crush? Do I have to blush when I get the autograph or say, "Wow thanks Mr.! You've made my day!!!!"

Sorry, it's just not for me. I enjoy watching the games and get a rush out of some of the individual and team performances. I like cheering for my team. I'll also don a jersey now and then to show my allegiance. But I just can't ask (and let's face it, some folks beg) another grown man to sign a card or photo for me to put on my mantle.

My mantle is saved for my own accomplishments, not someone else's.
