past tense of root is rote, not rooted.

Not in the slang tense, wrong use of the word.

"Rote" only exists as a past tense of "root" when the "root" you're speaking of is the orgin point of a given abstract subject and the "rote" is the learning of said abstract subject.

All other disambiguations of "root" that have tense selective forms are, in the past tense, spelled as "rooted".

For instance, you would not say that a tree was rote in the ground.

Side note: "Rote" can also refer to a welsh instrument called a crwth, one of the few words in English that is spelled entirely without vowels. The word rhymes with "tooth", the "w" taking the place of the vowel sound.

They were barely even in our division when they went. I rooted against the big bad Giants in that game.

The Bucs played against the Raiders in their Super Bowl.

And I was probably only 13 year old for this Super Bowl, but I still knew better than to root for the Bucs.
