Panther not "letting" Peppers walk

schefter isn't credible anymore.

probowl has no bearing on peppers status (or anyone else, fwiw). he will be a UFA. we only get comp picks for UFAs if we lose more than we get and even at that the earliest comp pick you can get is the 31st pick in the 3rd round. those draft picks don't come from the signing team. if pep walks and gets signed by someone, they don't owe us anything. we get a comp pick if we lose more UFAs than we sign.

if someone is going to be a restricted free agent, then you get a draft pick(s) from the signing team. if pep is tagged and someone else signs him then we get whatever picks we can (we'll be due 2 first rounders but most likely they will work out a deal where they get less than that because no one is going to want to swallow his contract and lose two first round picks to get a 30 year old enigma.

some probowlers who would have been able to cash in after hitting free agency this year won't be due to the rule changing and making them unable to hit FA after 4 years. with it being six years in an uncapped they are stuck with a RFA status and teams that want them will have to not only give up a lot of money but also a draft pick.

not sure what you think you heard or what schefter actually said but it was wrong.

In an uncapped year players need 6 accrued seasons instead of 4 to attain unrestricted free agency. There are also some restrictions on the last 8 and last 4 playoff teams. There is absolutely nothing to do with the Pro Bowl. Peppers was drafted in '02, so he would have even been unrestricted in '08 if that year was uncapped.

So others are correct. We would get at most a third round compensatory pick if Peppers walks. And that is only if we lose more unrestricted free agents than we sign.

ummmm Adam Schefter is the one who said yesterday that Panthers would not be placing the tag on him, and that Richardson said the team isn't planning to keep him

Rayzor is right. Schefter hasn't been a credible source since he left the NFL Network.

Schefter was quoting an "unnamed NFL source" on that story. I'd bet cash that the "source" is Peppers agent Carl Carey, since nothing that's come from the Panthers would confirm the story.

Whether it's credible or not isn't the point. The thread starter said the Schefter said Pro Bowlers would become RFA's. Why would he say that at the same time saying Peppers would not be a Panther? It would mean that all of a sudden a new and aspect of the uncapped year with gigantic implications has been discovered that nobody is anywhere is talking about. Considering how much attention all sources are givng this topic it would be in the forefront. The thread starter is either making stuff up or he heard something incorrectly.

Carolina — The Panthers didn't sign any qualifying players, so they will receive a comp pick for each qualifying player lost. They should get a fifth or sixth for Geoff Hangartner and a sixth or seventh for Frank Omiyale. There is a small chance that Mark Jones also will qualify. If so, the Panthers would get a seventh for him.

This guy is usually pretty reliable on compensatory picks. Bridges doesn't qualify for us because he was signed and cut by another team before moving on to the Cardinals.

The rules regarding free agency can be looked up by anyone. Schefter is expected to know that because it's his job.

It has no bearing on how reliable he is when breaking "inside" stories, and his track record since joining ESPN has been lousy.

There's nothing from any credible source to back up the notion that the Panthers are simply "letting him go". The only person spreading that story is Peppers' agent, and I wouldn't take him seriously if he told me the sky was blue.

Actually the OP said: "all free agents who made the probowl will be labeled unrestricted free-agents"

Make it all that much more bull

You are completely missing my point.

Everything I've read says that Peppers will not be a restricted free agent, thus declaring your post null and void. He will be unrestricted as of March 5th.

Then the smart thing to do would be to share would you have read, not be a smart ### and call the post null and void. If you know something I dont, share it.
