Burns should get into the $114-118M range for 5 years and a hefty guarantee, that puts him in the Top 10 of EDGE rushers.  If he isn't happy with that # I don't know how his team can justify more.

It’s math.  If you pay Burns 100M guaranteed it impacts what else you can put on the team.  And we need a lot.    Specifically on O.  Specifically as we try to groom Bryce into a good QB. 

Bengals have been successful in recent history  because of offensive draft picks.  They put their emphasis there.  Great cheap players.   They are entering a new window where they have to pay people and that will impact what they can do with the rest of the team.

Because Burrow just became the highest paid QB. Last year, Burrow,Chase and Higgins counted a combined 17.5M last year. And still only combine for 32M this year. And two DEs as good or better than Burns at less than Burns wants by himself. 

The Panthers have 55.75M in dead cap this year. The Bengals have 3M. That’s the difference.

Im also not sure why they kept him. If he isn't in the longterm it would make sense to get something for him. For all we know they might actually bring him back. Never know in these kind of situations.

Chase is on his rookie deal. He is going to want a new contract after 23 when he's eligible. 

Higgins is on his rookie contract. They will need to give him a new one too. 

There is now way they're getting all 3 players for under 100m a year. That's why cap space matters. You can't pay everyone what they want.

Really depends on the offer as how to proceed next. 

First things first. None of it matters if Fitts and Tepper are making the decisions moving forward.

Cmon Jimmy lets be realistic.

I know you know this but the salary cap is a zero sum game. Millions extra paid to a player who has not earned them negates the ability to use those millions for other players. 

If you are a long time fan of the Panthers, you know the team has often found itself in salary cap turmoil due to paying players more than they deserve. I don’t want the team to keep doing that.

I love this argument. My counter is always “I agree let’s pay him 100mil every season!” Then you say “no that’s too much don’t be stupid.” And basically kill your own argument, acknowledging that there is a limit you would pay him.
