Peppers contract Situation Discussion Thread (Dpanthers started it (^-^))

It just wouldnt make any sense to let him walk for nothing.

Yeah, theres no way we pay him 20 million dollars. But somebody will.

But anyways, here is the logical steps.

1). Place franchise tag on Pep.

2). Try to negotiate a long-term contract.

3). Trade him, even at a bare, unrealistic minimum, trade him for a 4th or 5th round pick. Atleast we will get something out of it. And that is unrealistic.

Theres no way the Pats woudlnt give up one of their first rounders to get Pep. There pass rush is below average at best. This would immediately fill a need for them. Plus, plus barring meeting in the Super Bowl, we wouldnt see Pep for 3 more years.

Per the NFL network, 5 mins ago, no contracts are being offered to any players until it's decided if this indeed a capped, or uncapped year.

...and apparently, that decision is not going to be made until some time after the NFL combine.

Hence, teams that offered too much money thinking it was going to be uncapped, and it turns out to be a capped year, have basically just screwed themselves.

Hmmm... So basically Carey is just doing the norm. Speaking out of his ass.

Im still sticking to my initial prediction that Pep signs an extension here in Carolina.

Richardson has been telling other owners we won't keep him. per Chris Mortensen. Screw him!

I'm sure Mr. Richardson has been running around to other owners blabbing about how he isn't keeping Peppers, that sounds exactly like Jerry Richardson (sarcasm).

I believe Michael Lombardi on the NFL network - owners are waiting to see what happens with the CBA before they make any big moves - makes perfect sense.

If I was Julius, this would make me consider getting a new agent. You don't hear any other agents spouting off about how teams have not called their clients, makes Carey look like a fool.

Everything you hear from Carl Carey or supposed leaks from unnamed "sources" are all potential bargaining tactics from Carey or the Panthers...

As with last year, Pep's immediate future rests in the hands of the Panthers, and if he won't sign long-term (the ultimate goal) he'll get the tag again...

If it comes down to it, that is exactly what will happen, and for anyone saying anything about him taking plays off or not being worth $20 Million next year, you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about...

Carl Carey is an imbecile from a negotiation standpoint, and if it weren't for a close personal relationship with Pep, he wouldn't even be an agent...

If you think it sounds stupid that we'd let Pep walk for nothing, then that's because it is stupid... Marty Hurney and Jerry Richardson are certainly (aside from throwing money at Delhomme) not stupid...

It doesn't even take insider information to know that you keep your best players, and if you have to let go of them, you get everything you can for them...

We've always wanted Pep to be a career Panther, and even his non-agent agent pretty much said that that is what they eventually wanted at the end of last offseason... What that non-agent agent fails to understand is that nothing is being done in front offices right now... In fact, the season hasn't officially ended... Some of you have hinted at it being inactive right now because of the questions about next season... Don't you think most owners/GMs are thinking about the same things probably ten times more than you are?...

Carey is impatient, and it's shown in the last few days more than it did last year... If it weren't for Carey, a lot of the issues with communicating with Pep wouldn't even exist...

I look for a long term deal to get done before February 25th (this is the last possible day to apply the franchise tag)... If it doesn't he'll get the tag to buy us more time to work it out...

I'll lay it out for you all and for Carl Carey...

If we tag Pep, it will likely be in an uncapped year which is good for the Panthers... Sure, he gets $20 Mil, but overall, it doesn't hurt the Panthers like it would in a capped year... ADVANTAGE Panthers

If we tag Pep and he or we want to ship him out, he'll have to sign the tag earlier to let us do the bargaining, but if he does that, he has little to no say where he'd end up... ADVANTAGE Panthers

If Pep decides to sign long-term with the Panthers, we'd likely hold the above two scenarios above his head as bargaining chips... That paired with his ability to stay close to home will mean we'd likely get him cheaper than most, although we'd still reward him for what he has done and what he is capable of and what he is worth... We all know that the answer to all three of those, regardless of hater banter, is a good amount... Fair is fair, and in the end, we'd be fair to Pep as long as he keeps doing what he's doing on the field... We'd likely even give performance based escalators to add motivation... ADVANTAGE BOTH

There are no other options, and for any writer or anyone employed by some sort of "sports authority" to think otherwise is illogical and uninformed... Simply letting Pep hit the market would be one of the biggest front office blunders of all time, and we already have had more than our share of those (Sean Gilbert, Jake Delhomme extension (this wasn't as bad as Gilbert, believe it or not), etc.)...

Have a little faith and trust in your front office... While it isn't rocket science, it certainly isn't special ed. either...

I am forwarding this post to Peppers, I am going tell him to take it as a resume for his should be vacant agent position.
