with 16 million, what Free Agents can we sign instead? Who can we get at DE/DT positions to fill the void?

IMO if we get Kemo back (hopefully without having to pay him the ridonkulous 9 million he is owed as a bonus) then this defense isn't going to lose anything by losing Peppers.

Brown has shown flashes of being a very good edge rusher as has Charles Johnson. Meeks is going to continue to make this a defense that nobody wants to play.

As far as the 16 million bucks left over from Pep, we can use that to add a lot of QUALITY depth which is something that this team needs badly particularly at the WR spot.

exactly my point. i am not saying we have to keep him at any cost, but to just get rid of him with no plan or eye for available fa's is stupid.

everyone screaming for pep to leave, have no idea who we could sign for de. pep at 50% is better than most de we would get at 110%.

i dont know how people can hate peppers so much but be okay with jake getting 13 mill. and that guy single handedly keeps us out of games!

I'd rather spend the money on Wilfork if he's available..Imagine Wilfork and Kemo in the middle of our line with Lewis coming in on 3rd downs! Just try to run on us! That will set us up for our strength which is our LB core.. Realistically Wilfork and Peppers will command Haynsworth money on the open market. So other than maybe Kampman or some other lineman ( Dansby maybe ) our DLine which is already our weakness will struggle. We need DT help more than DE help though in my opinion...

and will they be able to average 10 sacks a year? i don't care if some of them came against garbage opponents...it's still a number that's hard to reach.

i think with the right system and team surrounding him(which is there) Pep could approach/break sack records.

Most Sacks, Career, 200, Bruce Smith 1985-2003

19 seasons @ 10.52 avg per season for Bruce. Pep has that avg with 2007 bringing the number down.

Most Sacks, Season, 22.5, Michael Strahan, New York Giants, 2001

Some will argue this, but Pep has the physicality to do it. Just needs to play consistently, and get 1.5 a game. The season may increase to 18 games as well

Most Sacks, Game, 7.0, Derrick Thomas, Kansas City Chiefs vs. Seattle Seahawks, Nov. 11, 1990

Unlikely, but we play Seattle, St. Louis and Cleveland next season.

Most Seasons, 10 or More Sacks, 13, Bruce Smith, 1986-90, 1992-98, 2000

Pep has 6 seasons above 10 currently

Others to mention that could be attained since Pep says he is in his prime.

-Most Consecutive Seasons, 10 or More Sacks, 9, Reggie White, 1985-93

-Most Consecutive Games, Sack, 10, Simon Fletcher, 1992-93; DeMarcus Ware, Dallas Cowboys, 2007-2008

really??? i can give charles johnson, but everette brown hasnt proved he is a every down de. is the best we can do tyler and hilee?

would be interestes in seeing how they perform w/o pep for a while.

I agree, EB hasn't shown he can be an every down DE. However, CJ has and CJ will perform if given the chance. EB can be the 3rd down DE with CJ or TB moving inside.

You might as well pick CJ for your fantasy football teams. He has averaged 5 sacks a game the past two years in limited action and pulled in 25 tackles last year while being a situational player and missing a few games with a torn pectoral muscle. Pep only had 42 tackles as a mostly full-time starter. Not saying CJ is Pep, he isn't and there will be a drop off in play, but CJ is a player and the team is well prepared to let Pep and his 20 mill in salary walk.

Richardson may be waiting to see if owners/players' union negotiations might improve enough to resolve the situation before the end of February, before making any major decisions on anticipated large contracts such as Peppers, and I suppose the total contract budget as a whole.

It appears Peppers/Carey may be posturing as part of a negotiations strategy.
