Peppers contract Situation Discussion Thread (Dpanthers started it (^-^))

You know, I really think we're all being a little silly by listening to anything Carey has to say... he pulled this kind of grandstanding last year and the Panthers sat around and thought: "well isn't that special".

Is there any dire need for them to reach a decision and/or call Peppers right now? The powers that be spent all last week @ the Senior Bowl, does it surprise anyone that they didn't drop what they were doing to call Peppers agent when they could just as easily do that this week, or next week, or anytime up until 2/25?

As for the Schefter report, I seriously doubt Mr. Richardson would walk around blabbing about how they're not going to keep Peppers. I think these "sources" live in Schefter's imagination and are the same ones that told him we're going after Vick.

I find it hard to imagine after all the fighting we've done to keep Peppers, that we would just let him walk. We were willing to pay 16 million last year and cripple our cap, so why wouldn't we be willing to pay 20 million this year with no cap? (unless Jerry Richardson strongly believes there will be a cap). It's possible we could work out a trade under the tag and if not, we rent him for one more year.

We could also do things the "Patriot way", give him whatever contract he wants and then turn around and trade him. I don't advocate that as a general practice, but I think the other guys on the team would understand that move if the only alternative was to let him walk away for nothing or pay him an amount of money that would take away from our ability to pay guys like Thomas Davis the amount of money we think he deserves.

Just read on that Observer article about it that Schefter had reported The Big Cat told an unnamed source that the Panthers were preparing to let Pep walk in free agency, or something like that...

If Big Cat said this, then it's over. Not only does this show how inept our FO is, it also shows how unprofessional they are and why they should be standing in an unemployment line.

You haven't even contacted him to gauge his asking price? He even made it clear that he was happy with the direction of the team and the defense's performance and was open to coming back... Yet, the FO hasn't even contacted him. Not only that, they promised to contact him, and didn't anyway. Way to be professional.

I just don't believe they would let him walk with no compensation. I don't care if we settled for a 3rd rounder if all they want to do is get his salary off the books, at least get something for him.

I felt kind of betrayed with the way he went about things last year, but I know it's a business. But, I also said I could see where he was coming from when you got dickheads like Hurney and Fox running the show. I'd want out too. Let's see how our DL looks next year when every game each guy on the front 4 will be easily blocked with a single blocker. This is ridiculous.

The FO has a pretty damn good idea as to Pepper's expected asking price. They offered him a contract several times that would have made him to highest paid defensive player in the league.

Do you actually think he would significantly lower his asking proce after another Pro-Bowl Season? Peppers is an athletic freak. But, he is too inconsistent to sign long-term for a boatload of money.

I have no problem with letting him walk...as long as we make moves with the cash. If he walks and we don't make moves, this was a financial play by JR.

I agee. But knowing we prob could have got a 1st round pick for him and now only a 3rd next year :mad2:

Why do you think we could get a 1st round pick for him? We could not get it last year...and now he is a year older.

People on this board are dillusional all over again.

I believe these reports are all BS spewed by Peppers agent(and a dip poo reporter). From what I read it would seem the Panthers hold the cards because I believe they can still tag Pep up till Feb. 25. His agent stated JR gave instructions for Hurney to get something done and they weren't that far apart on money. WELL...........hey agent, make a call and move the money closer........see if the Panthers move on it. This BS that we haven't heard anything yet is just that. The Panthers will make a BUSINESS decision soon one way or the other. It just won't be fast enough (or the right one) for some fans.

It really is impossible to please the fans in this situation. Either that let him walk and people bitch or they tag him and people bitch for paying so much for his effort or they tag and trade him for what fans think is too little.

I don't want to lose Pep either but there are some other items to consider:

1. Everyone thinks we ought to use the money to sign some free agents. Don't bet on it. Why? B/c we've got a boatload of guys whose contracts are about up. And all of them are important. Richard Marshall. TD. DeAngelo. Moore. Give me them than Pep any day.

2. Signing Pep to a long term deal that breaks the bank breaks us. You've locked up a ton of jack on one guy. You might say, but, but, this next year is uncapped. Guess what? When a deal gets done, the cap returns. And with a big contract, we're screwed.

3. Is he really worth it? I'd sign him for 10 million. No more.

Let him walk. In fact, don't even make an offer for this fool. He is Albert Haynesworth 2.0 You think he played lazy this year? Wait until he gets a long term contract from someone. I understand having a bad game, it happens, but its pretty obvious that he just doesn't show up 50% of the time, and thats not acceptable....

i still dont get you guys! how does a lazy bastard as some of you say make all pro teams and all decade teams. do you guys have film other nfl pros dont? besides just going to the games and having a "dvr"?

if i was the fo i would sign pep to a 4-5 year deal , heavily front loaded into next year.

people just automatically thing get rid of pep and we save 20 mil. that too simplistic thinking. it doesnt work like that in the nfl. we have guys we have to resign still. they may demand more money and eat into that 20 mil real quick.

has any even look at what fa's are available next year? so what if we have 20 mill if all that are left are scrubs !

funny how fast people forget that beason held out too, moose left for more money, and so did witherspoon. but pep. oh no he HAS to take a discount!
