That kind of profile usually screams "possession receiver".

That's not a knock on him by the way. You need those. Can also be valuable in the red zone.

Yep, that's why I've been telling people that his absolute ceiling is probably Tee Higgins, also not a great separator but good at contested balls and great at finding the open space and making the catch.

I honestly don't remember that but no, he's not the same style player DJ Moore was at all.

Moore was a great "run after catch" guy. Mingo isn't that.

Yeah, me neither, I never heard that he was the next "D.J. Moore." People may have assumed that, being that he was the first receiver picked after the Moore trade, but he was always more of a possession guy that moves the chains.

I've seen Anquan Bolden as his comparison by a few people.

The scouting report on him coming out of college was that he wasn't great at creating separation, was just really good at catching contested balls and running after the catch.

From NFL.com

Big, strong slot receiver possessing the mental and physical toughness to outperform his speed limitations. The career production is nothing special, but it’s clear he’s put time and effort into his craft. He runs crisp, well-paced routes and ramps up his focus when it’s time to go get the football. A lack of separation burst and long speed could make for more contested catches, but he has the body type and willingness for that work. Mingo can get tough yards after the catch and is an above-average blocker. He has the skill level and demeanor to become a starting slot receiver for teams using 11 personnel (three WRs) as their base offense.

This also doesn't scream worthy of a 2nd round pick. Fitt has doomed this franchise with poor drafting or overvaluing players (ex. DJ Johnson.) Why do teams like GB and Pitt always continually find starters in the later rounds but not the Panthers? We need a major overhaul with the GM and scouting department.

I was literally getting ready to type your first sentence in a reply to this thread until I saw your post. This is exactly why I have no faith in Fitz as GM going forward. He picked the same type of WR in 2021 with TMJ...who now has permission to seek a trade. We shouldn't be picking JAGS in the 2nd round of the NFL draft at WR when the NFL is becoming more of a passing league every year.

I'm not spending a 2nd round pick on a "possession receiver" unless my roster is deep with talent (on both sides of the ball) and I already have two legit players (who can get separation) at the Wideout positions. You can find possession receivers good hands but poor separation on the 3rd day of the draft or even as undrafted FA's.

It takes most WRs 2-3 years to come into their own.  Give him a solid off season to work on his craft before passing judgment.

Is that old saying really true anymore?  at least in terms of the really good ones.

sure feels like most WRs that turn out to be good in recent history....show it pretty early.  Sure feels like it is skewing more 1-2 seasons now.

True - but he's no DJ Moore replacement as was kind of sold to us.

Well let's be real that was a magic beans kind of sell anyways. Scott Fitterer continually thinks he's one the smartest GM's in the league when he's one of the worst specifically because of instances like this. Mingo has plenty of potential but he was never going to replace Moore immediately.

the dude who made the pro bowl his rookie year?  while setting the rookie reception record, winning OROY, etc.

Did they call him a bad or poor man's version of Boldin?  Boldin was a certified monster out the gate.
