Greg Williams suggesting the Saints injure Manning or overreaction by Mike Florio??

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams recently told a Nashville radio station that the Saints plan to rattle Colts quarterback Peyton Manning by hitting him whenever they can, and that the goal is to knock him out of the game.........

.........."This guy's got a great clock in his head," Williams told 104.5 The Zone, via ESPN.com. "The big thing is that he throws the ball so early that we're going to have to do a good job of finding ways to get to him and when we do get to him we're going to have to make sure he gets a couple 'remember me' shots when we get there."........

......"When you put too much of that type of worry on a warrior's mind, he doesn't play all out," Williams said. "If it happens, it happens. And the only thing you'd like for me to say is that if it happens you hope he doesn't get back up and play again.".........

......You hope he doesn't get back up and play again. (We wonder what Archie thinks about his former team's objectives?)

In other words, "We'll gladly trade a penalty or two if it means that we get to see Curtis Painter instead of Peyton Manning."

In other words, the NFL should consider fining not only the players when dirty hits are applied to quarterbacks, but also their coaches.

florio took it upon himself to suggest he means cheap shots or late hits......i think its every defenders plan to hit the poo out of every guy he hits. regardless of who it is. i played linebacker my entire life....i dont want to hurt someone.....but if it happens....then it happens....cause iam coming like a fuging freight train to break your helmet into pieces.....thats the mentality. thats football.

Yeah he's a bitch. Basically, he's saying "I'm too dumb to come with a strategy to stop him and my players are too inferior to execute any plan I can come up with."

Didn't this same dickbag suggest they injure Smitty when we played them?

The NFL should be keeping tabs on this guy, it's getting ridiculous. Football isn't for soft individuals, but to go in with this being your biggest intention is ridiculous.

I remember when Wesley unloaded on Clifton Smith against Tampa this year after the fair catch was called and when they showed the highlight on FOX, all the former players gasped... I think it was Strahan, when asked if he thought it was intentional, he said something along the lines of "I hope not, you don't go into a game intentionally trying to injure a guy. We all work too hard throughout the week to do something like that, no guy in this league would go into a game wanting to do that."

Well, apparently no guy in the league except for New Orleans. I like smashmouth, snot and slobber, hardcore football, but this goes beyond that. What they did to Brett Favre was cheap... And not b/c he was Brett Favre, it could've been any QB.

Greg Williams is a total POS.

He came out and said that their intention was to knock Manning out of the game. And, they are willing to take penalties to do it.

That says they intend to hit himlate and try and hurt him. There is no place in sports for a dirty coach like this.

But, I am sure Saints fans will justify it.

if this hadn't been williams strategy in every other game he's coached then i would say overreaction.

williams is a scumbag coach and probably an even worse human being. trying to take the cheap and easy way out by hurting your competition rather than beating them.

Um, isn't this the same strategy that they used against Favre last week? Why all the surprise?

Exactly,

.

I have no problem with hitting a guy and blitzing to get pressure. After all this is football not tiddly winks. But if it comes to hitting a guy very late, cutting out his knees or otherwise intentionally trying to hurt them like with chop blocks or the like, then it is over the top. After all this is their livlihood which can be taken away with a severe injury. It happens enough as it is without making it intentional.

I know what Williams is saying. He is clearly saying he won't be upset if his team gets a few personal foul penalties for cheap shotting Manning if it sends him out of the game.

I wonder how he would feel if Indy did the same thing with Brees. Plus I would think coming out and saying it is pretty stupid. I imagine after the Vikings game, they will making this a point of emphasis and will be throwing the flag pretty quickly. Might even eject a player or two. If you are going to do it, at least don't be too obvious about it.

Nice points... and to add to what he said... I'm all for hitting the QB hard if it's a legal, before the whistle hit... for instance the hit that was put on Kurt Warner after the interception he threw... he was part of the play and got blasted, so be it... but to say that you want to knock the QB out, in essence try to hurt him on purpose, is wrong, cheap and dirty... but again, why all the surprise? It was obvious the other night that the Saints were of a mind to take cheap shots, so why wouldn't they do it again?

I think that the guy knows that the other team is going to try and come for Brees as well. The Saints and Brees himself seem to be pretty good at not letting that happen all that often.

This isn't the Cobra Kai dude telling his kids to sweep the leg - this is the coach telling his team to be aggressive, and if they get a few penalties because they mistimed it a little or followed through a bit too much, then he is not going to go off on them for it. Of course, his opponents are going to use it for motivation or to "prove he's a douche" so it can backfire.

Isn't he the same guy that mentioned injuring one of our guys or another team a month or two ago?

I'm pretty sure there is a quote prior to the Panther game (1st) where he said they wanted to drop Steve on his head and for him not to get back up. Can't find it yet, though.

It's already been stated, but had Williams not commented before about wanting to take star players out of games, I might be inclined to dismiss it.

"What you have to do is to turn his little body over so that when he does get it, he lands on his head and he doesn’t come back in for a while."

If you can't beat them, take 'em out of the game.

MY big issue with this is that he is telling his players that will be blitzing, to not bother getting their hands up to force an incompletion and rather to get maximum momentum to hit him as hard as possible.

Most players, when they know they can't get to the QB before he releases it, will attempt to deflect the pass. These guys do not. You could see in the Vikings game, the blitzing players almost ignored his throwing motion and just went to hit him as hard as possible.

Favre recently mentioned that the hardest hits you take are the ones after you have thrown the ball as you can't prepare your body for the hit and brace yourself as you fall.

The McCray one where he thought Favre still had the ball was a prime example of this. He did not care where the ball was. Did not even bother trying to locate it, because he had a clear shot at him. The play at Favre's knees was blatantly against teh rules.

It is dirty. I can forgive the occassional time it happens, but to ignore making a play to simply hit the QB as hard as possible is just not the point of the game.

For the first time in my life I am really rooting for Manning. I hope he absolutely destroys them.

    • Probably so in the big picture.  The 2025 class has largely already been recruited though.  The portal is what it is.   Bill going to need time to find the kids that will be what he wants and that will put up with his world/ways.   i just think the auto contender next year stuff is silly.  I’m largely just needling and addressing the timetable Whoa put out there.  He needs time.
