Overtime Rule

I hate to say it but I think it needs to be changed similar to college. I generally hate anything college football related, including the rankings and playoffs. But I'm not a fan of losing a game due to the other team winning a simple coin toss. Give both teams a chance, not from a set yard line.

The point is to score as much point as you can during the 1st overtime

The point is also to score as many points as you can during regulation. What you're seeing nowadays is people playing for a tie rather than risking it all for the win, and making the overtime rules more felxible isn't going to reduce the frequency of it.

And I got what was different about your suggestion, Car123. Ultimatley, it still resigns itself to sudden death in case of a tie, which functionally only guarantees that the game will be longer and probably see even more injuries.

The present setup in OT could use a little tweaking. I personally like Sudden Death, but I think it would be a better system if both teams WERE ASSURED OF AN OPPORTUNITY AT A POSSESSION. I've explained this on another thread about this same issue (and it will no doubt come up again in the future).

Some examples and scenarios...

'Cats and Saints go into OT. 'Cats take the kickoff and score (how is irrelevant). On the subsequent kickoff, NO fumbles, 'Cats recover, game over (the Saints have satisfied the opportunity at a possesssion - OAP - requirement).

Cat's take opening kickoff of OT. On the first play (or the second, third, etc, again, it's irrelevant) they throw an INT which is ran back for a score. Game over, Saints win, both teams have satisfied the OAP.

Same scenario, but when running with the INT, the Saints fumble, and the 'Cats recover. The 'Cats go on to score. Game over, both teams have satisfied the OAP.

OAP is either a bonafide possession or a fumble, like when receiving a kick/punt. Another scenario that would apply is an onside or recovered kickoff that wasn't fumbled, i.e., it's the responsibility of the receiving team to actually gain possession of the ball, if they fail to do so, oh well! The same with running with a turnover, if they should turn the ball over on that same play, they've had a possession, and satisfied the OAP requirement.

I was talking with a friend of mine in the office today about this. She suggested something like the college game, but instead of each team starting on the 25, you would receive a kick-off just like normal. Each team gets a posession.

This brings special teams, offense, and defense into play for each team.

A team would really have to think things out about working for a FG...because the other team gets a shot at a score as well.

I kind of like this scenario.
