After the game at Boston...

Should Whitney still be included in the trade list? I mean, yeah, we could potentially get some good players for him. But, the guy played his ass off. He is one of the more athletic guys on the team and a great leader from what we can all tell on the ice. I think we sign him to a 2 year extension once his contract his up (or restructure it this offseason to fit over the next few years before he is up for FA. Not sure what his contract is currently). And I'd be crazy if this game was a one time thing for him, but we know that the guy produces every week. Any other thoughts on this?

According to many sources, the Bruins are closing in on what should be the first trade of many as we head towards the March 3rd trade deadline. While no sources have been able to come up with any concrete names, I have heard that Carolina and Boston have stepped up discussions over the last few days and that Ray Whitney may be who the Bruins have their eye on.

He's a FA after this season and would be a rental to whoever gets him, thus maker the Canes a better team and there is a good chance he would sign back with us in the off season.

If Pitkanen is traded it will be because we ripped someone off bad. He probably wont go though, because there have already been a lot of calls about him and JR wants to include him in the nucleus of the team.

Whitney, Corvo, Cole, Wallin, Cullen etc.. anybody who's older is basically up for grabs.

Whitney is obviously the biggest trade deadline asset for this team, and barring something silly, I see him being traded. I believe he already stated he has no problem waiving his NTC if it will help the club.

He will be dealt to either LA or Vancouver, or something like that, play the rest of the season/playoffs and then sign back here in the Summer.

Whitney and Cullen were listed on TSN's list of the 10 most likely players to get traded. I see both getting traded here shortly. I still think someone blows carolina away and gets them to trade Pitkanen, IDK why but I think he gets traded. He's already got a lot of buyers and that will just heat up as we get closer to the deadline.

He's one of the best "available" options on the blue line. (Teams are only asking because we are so terrible) What else is there? Sheldon Souray? And even then, he has a NTC and his cap hit on a cup contender will be relatively large.

There are a lot of teams looking for blue line help, and there's just not a lot on the market. So yes, I could see it happening, but seriously Joni is one of the only people on the team that can move the puck.. much less back on the blue line. He's probably the best passer on the team, if not for Ray Whitney, and at worst he's the second best. He's one of the only reasons why our PP is not absolutely terrible, and he has good chemistry with a lot of the other young guys.

He is likely considered to be part of the core of the team by JR, and it would take a huge ripoff type of deal to move him I think.

There's another DMan I see moving way before Joni Pitkanen... and that's Dion Phaneuf. I'm just not sure the Flames want to give up on him until the Summer.

Oh I expect that Phaneuf will be traded, I really think he wants out. Not sure why, but when that many rumors pop up about you wanting out and being traded, then somethings up.

This is list of players listed untouchable by Rutherford.

Eric Staal, Cam Ward, Brandon Sutter, Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu. That's it, the whole list. Everyone else can be had and is available. While I think it would take a lot to get Pitaken, I also think there are going to be enough teams willing enough to give up something big that something will get done.

Hot damn went to the game tonight vs. the Islanders and man that was a lot of fun. We're starting to play some pretty good hockey as of late. Staal has 8 goals in 5 games since getting the C.

Forslund made a good point on the radio afterwards on 99.9 that as the team is playing better, it allows JR more bargaining power. It changes our perspective from a terrible team having a fire sale, to a team that's playing relatively well that has a few valuable pieces that are available. Could possibly get more for renting out guys like Whitney and Cullen in exchange for dropping from 1 or 2 to 4 or 5 in the draft. But if it's like they said, 1-6'ish in this year's draft is roughly the same thing. There's no Crosby or Ovechkin at the top of this years class.
