Why is this team the "CAROLINA" Panthers?

Its good business sense. Instead of declaring yourself the team of a city you make it the team of 2 states. Broader market base then an otherwise very small Charlotte market. This is a product after all the more people you can target the better.

Plus the logo was made by closely resembling the combined boarders of the two states.

Charlotte sucks too much ass to support the team by itself. Most people there follow the Steelers, Eagles, Giants, etc. You need to get out in the sticks a bit to get enough fans.
