so basically for a 2nd and 4th round pick we moved up 9 spots in a first round to get a talented Tackle.... I like the trade a lot.... I would rather have Otah then the #28 pick this year

At first, I thought the Jets Jenkins trade was a tie but I think we got the better of that one.

Hey all,

Long time lurker/first time poster, so here goes:

I though it would be interesting to look at exactly what the Panthers gave up for Otah in terms of the draft pick value chart used by many GMs.

The Panthers gave up the 28th pick of 2009 (at best), along with the 43rd and 109th picks of 2008. By using the chart and adding the values of each of these picks, the Panthers gave up 1206 points of draft-pick value.

The Eagles on the other hand, gave up the 19th overall pick of the 2008 draft which equates to 875 points of draft-pick value.

Taking the difference between these two values, it the Panthers gave up 331 points of draft value, which is about equal to the value of the 57th overall pick, or a low second round pick in order to move up 9 spots.

Using solely the draft pick value chart again, the move by the Panthers from the 28th pick (660 value) to the 19th pick (875 value) would require Carolina giving up 215 extra points, or the 75th overall pick in a perfectly fair trade. Subtracting the 215 points necessary from the 331 points the Panthers actually gave up, the total value lost is closer to 116 points! which is equal to the last pick of the 3rd round (96th pick).

So in terms of draft pick value alone, the Panthers come out on the short end of the stick, but this of course does not take into account the value Otah has added to the team. Personally I believe Otah has contributed more than enough to say that this trade was a positive. With 12 games started and a top 3 rushing attack, I don't think the results could have been much better with any other player. Otah in my mind certainly makes up for any value lossed according to the draft pick value chart (the 96th overall pick).

Long story short - The trade for Otah has really paid off!. Although, anyone who has watched him play can say that with confidence...

Otah is quickly establishing himself as one of the better run blockers in the league. Small price to pay.
