Stewart to have foot surgery

Surprised only at the timing. It looks like this would have come sooner unless he had a recent setback.

it's almost 2 months earlier in the offseason than when he had tow surgery a couple of years ago.

he's proven he can perform without practicing or participating in offseason activites/training camp, so recovery time is more than enough for next season.

i wouldn't be surprised if this was planned some time ago.

Kemo had no idea that he even had an achilles problem before his went, so Stewart is damn lucky to get through the season and to have the ablilty to take care of this in the off season. I think the training staff deserves a lot of credit for the way they handled Stewart this year.

No surprises here, but I think it raises flags against both our backs health. So those misguided fools who wanted to trade either of them, need to be aware that all teams will be cautious on their injuries.

Frankly, with both carrying problems this season, it would be nuts to move into next season with just one feature back.

He also mentions bits about the coaching holes.

Considering RB is probably the easiest position in all of football to find an "elite" player IDT trading one of these guys is misguided. ESPECIALLY when we have one of the best OLs in football and the other two RBs on the team are fully capable of sharing some carries to give the primary guy a breather.

I don't want to trade Deangelo because IMO he is the best back in the league. But I would trade Stewart for a first round pick and a shot to get Dez Bryant. I love Stewart and the way he runs but contract situations get sticky and I have a bad feeling that both of these guys will not be Panthers after the 2010 season anyways...

williams missed some OTAs due to ankle related issues. he missed 3 games in his rookie season from a sprained ankle.

he's had leg and foot related injuries throughout college that has caused him to miss games too.

that's the life of a running back.

You mentioned about 6 games in 3 years....not my definition of injury prone.

But again, I like him and Stew sharing the rock. That duo is nasty.

If that were the case then why would anyone give up a 1st round pick. Heck why did we bother picking Stewart in the 1st to begin with, it's not hard finding elite RBs, we should have picked up Forte and his 3.8 yard per carry. 3.8 isn't impressive? Don't care, he can still carry it loads of times.

I mean just look at the performance of DWills draft class! Bush, Maroney, Addai & White have been outstanding. 2005, possibly the greatest NFL draft for running backs brought in Brown, Benson, Cadilac, Arrington, Shelton, Morency. 2007 brought a slacker called Peterson, but other than that there were other stunning draft picks in Lynch, Irons, Henry & Jackson.

History proves that it is pretty easy to get an elite runningback, so we might as well auction off our elite guys for some onknown commodity.

If you have taken what I have written literally, then I now understand why you want to trade away our most important position on the offense. There is a reason why players such as LT, Peterson, Jackson & Portis are still up there every year. It is NOT easy to get ELITE Rbs. At the moment we have two, who are performing as well as any running back in the last 3 or 4 years has, other than Johnson. DWill has a 5.1 yard per carry and Stewart has a 4.9 yard per carry for their respective careers, hardly any running back can compare with that over the same time period.

Incidently Peterson has a 4.9 ypc.

QFT

The reason that there appear to be so many elite RBs in the league is the media says there are. So many backs are hyped up once they string together a couple of 100yd games but in reality few first string backs manage >4.5 ypc for multiple years.

In 2009 there were 11 backs with 800+ at 4.5+ a pop. 2 of them were Panthers.

In 2008 there were 10 backs with 800+ at 4.5+ a pop. 2 of them were Panthers.

In 08-09 there were 4 backs who managed this feat in both years. 2 of them were Panthers.

Just saying...

Bingo.

Classic case this year was Cedric Benson. He started off very very hot and put together those 100 games and had a decent average too, but then for some reason it tailed off, badly. He finished the season a shade over 4 ypc, which is merely average now. However the media player on him and played on him and made it sound like he was a dominant runner this year, when in actuality he had huge games off his OLine but then could not make the magic when they couldnt. He just carried it, a lot. Similar story with Thomas Jones, individually was not that impressive, but his shear weight of carries played into his favor.

I also feel the media still think 1,000 yard seasons are impressive...

The backs who average 4.5 and over are the ones who can make things happen regardless on their OLine. No one would know the implications removing part of double trouble, their successes could well be very linked together.
