Possible receiver Coaches

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

The first name that came to mind for me when this job opened up was Terry Robiskie. Unfortunately, he has a job already. He's been the receivers coach for the Falcons ever since Mike Smith was hired. Unless his contract was up this season, he's not available. Same deal with Hue Jackson. Right now he's the Qb coach for the Ravens.

Stan Hixon

Redskins receiver coach since Joe Gibbs second stint as head coach; likely won't be retained under Shanahan; prior to joining the Skins was the WR coach for LSU under Nick Saban; has a Carolina connection via prior coaching stints at South carolina and Appalachian State; has worked recently with young receivers and with a small, mercurial guy in the Steve Smith mold (Santana Moss); there are a few interviews with him online where you can read his coaching ideas; lots of good stuff; I'd love for him to get a look

Richard Mann

NFC South connection; Buccaneers receiver coach (and recently assistant head coach) up until January of this year when the Bucs agreed to let him seek other opportunities; brought out the best in guys like Antonio Bryant, Joey Galloway and Keenan McCardell; a little up there in age (has been coaching for 30 years); last word I have on him is that he was interviewing for a spot on Mike Shanahan's staff in Washington; worth considering if he doesn't get the redskins gig

Gil Haskell

Previously the OC of the Seahawks for several years under Mike Holmgren; prior to that spent a season running the Panthers version of the West Coast Offense with Steve Beuerlein at the controls; Panther connected, but not Fox connected; loads of experience coaching wide receivers and offense in general; a little long in the tooth (only two years younger than retired coach Richard Williamson) and really wants to be a head coach but hasn't been in the right spot and time is running out; I do wonder if he might be looking to reunite with longtime colleague Mike Holmgren, but that's pure speculation; great hire if he's interested in coming back here

Jimmy Robinson

Currently WR coach of the Packers; hired in 2006; might be available since assistant contracts can often be around 3 years; has enjoyed success as a WR coach with the Packers and other teams; connected to John Fox in that he was the Giants WR coach during all but one year of Fox's tenure as Giants DC; long shot that he'd be available, but a slam dunk of a hire if he is

James Lofton

Working as a broadcaster with Westwood One these days; worked as Marty Schottenheimer's receiver coach from 2002 forward but was abruptly fired by Norv Turner after his first year as Chargers head coach (the firing was questioned); spent one season after as receiver coach for the Raiders; was considered a candidate for the Raiders head coaching position, then later was fired; animosity with the Raiders would put him in good standing with John Fox, and he has a Panthers connection, having worked as a broadcaster for Panther preseason games some years back; unknown if he's looking to get back into coaching, but he's available if wanted

Mike Pope

Giants TE coach but coached receivers at the college level for the first dozen years of his college career; another coach with a Fox connection since they worked together Fox's final two years with the Giants; more than once has been rumored to be on John Fox's "short list" as a coach he wanted to bring to the Panthers (last time, for the OC job); again though, availability is uncertain

Robert Prince

Recently let go in the Seahawks staff shakeup; worked in Bill Walsh's development program for minority coaches in the early 2000s; has 18 years of coaching experience, but only the last few at the pro level coaching wide receivers; during that time, he drew decent performances out of less than stellar talent like Ernest Wilford and Reggie Williams; the team needs to get younger in the receiving corps; a younger coach might be a good idea too

Flame away, not sure if Ricky Proehl is coaching material, but was a helluva receiver, helluva very nice respected, and good person, and could be a step for him to get into the league in a coaching position, doing something that he does know, and was one of the best for quite some time in the league.

He would also be great for the TE's I would think. Just a thought, throwing it out there. It may be for him, or it may not be. It would have to be something he would enjoy doing as much as he enjoyed playing the game and catching the ball for it to become successful though I think.

Moose's days are getting shorter, and thinking long term....Ricky and Moose combo teaching young WR's would be a plus in my book. Organizational friendly, and knowledgeable of the organiztion.

Ricky has my vote, but maybe he's a little to laid back for Fox football. :D

Once again, depends on if they are "Coaching Material". Some can perform on the field, but can't coach worth a damn.

I liked this better when I posted it first. :D I brought Lofton to the community.

Robinson isn't available. Pope probably isn't either, and probably would've come here already if it would've happened.

Pope's kind of an enigma to me. More than once his name has come up when Fox has been looking for a position coach or an OC, but it's never happened. I'm not even sure he's been interviewed.

Of the guys I've researched thus far, I like Hixon the best.

he was mentioned numerous times. He was the only current Giant coach in 2002 that he wanted, and was considered to be the favorite to be OC when Weis stayed with NE (that was apparently very close to happening). He and Skipper were the two position coaches he definitely wanted - you always assumed Williamson would be there. Boudreau and Breaux, I didn't feel like they were more than just guys who stayed, and then they both left a year later.

I think he likes it there, though, and enough to go through coach turnover for it.

Good remembrance of Pope, though he hasn't coached WR since Mississippi in 82.

Obviously, of my group, I'm a Lofton guy. Haskell was fantastic too, but I don't know what his deal is with the team or if it was amicable.

I never got any indication that his departure from the Panthers was unfriendly. He just wanted to work with Mike Holmgren again after Holmgren moved on to Seattle. Gotta wonder if that particular history would repeat itself, though I don't know of any openings in Cleveland.

Speaking of Cleveland, oddball happening there. They were, at least temporarily, looking for a new receiver coach when George McDonald resigned to take the same job at Rutgers. But then a week later, McDonald resigned from Rutgers and went back to the Browns :sosp:

My guess is that was related to the whole "Mangini staying or going" drama.
