Question for anyone knowledgeable on Linux

I'm getting ready to take a class on Linux and I'd like to install it on my laptop. However I don't want to replace Vista, I'd like to use dual booting. I have a copy of Redhat Linux Fedora Core 2 and when I try to install it, it doesn't recognize my monitor or my hard drive. I'm pretty sure I can use a generic display for my monitor but I don't like messing around when it comes to my hard drive. I looked my hard drive up on the HCL and it is not listed. So does that mean there is no way to install it or what?

Blah. Install ubuntu. I use it for work on my laptop, I dual boot both. Just make sure you install it on the right HD partition, I partitioned and installed it on the Vista one the first time because I wasn't paying attention. Wups.
