Both want to be great RB.and being on the same team will take away from each other I think they know that and will want to move.like I said Williams wanted to be apart of history of 1100 yard duo.The ball is in the panthers FO court of the one we will keep long term. But I just dont think we will keep both long term when both want to be the best and win.
they can't do that here? what are they trying to win? what do they want to be the best at?

I think a lot of people are basing a lot on hope and their own wishes, not what is likely. The reality is that it will not be cost effective to keep both on the team for their second contracts. Someone said we could afford to keep both, and while that is technically true, the reality is that if you pay both even a hometown discount, it will force the team to sacrifice someplace else.

And if anyone thinks a hometown discount means one would be willing to sign for less than #1 money, they are deluding themselves. While money may not be the biggest issue for either back, they both will want to take care of their families and set themselves up for life. They are also acutely aware that they play a position with a relatively short lifespan, so know their second contract may be their only chance to make the big money. Even splitting carries, their value will probably never be as high as it will be when their rookie contracts expire. Friendship is nice, spitting carries is nice, but neither are nice enough to give up the millions of dollars it would take to stay together.

Another point. As much as we all love Williams, Stewart is actually a better fit in Fox’s preferred style of power running. So if Fox does end up staying (whether or not that is what you want, it is a distinct possibility if we have a good year), there is a realistic chance that Stewart would eventually start getting the greater number of carries and maybe even take over the starting spot…and with the way JS finished the year, possibly as soon as this coming season.

And no matter how much of a team player DW is, that will not go down smoothly. Right now it is easy for him to feel comfortable and happy with the situation since he is the one getting more carries and is the starter. But take that away from him, and I have a sneaking suspicion he might start feeling different. I don’t think he would ever become a malcontent, but he wouldn’t be happy. After all, it is only human nature. Once you have achieved a certain status and feel you have reached a certain level in your profession, it is bruising to your pride and ego to lose it…even to a friend that is deserving.
