Observer: Is it time for Panthers to go to Andy Dalton?

Brian Burns was asked what he’d say to rookie quarterback Bryce Young in the wake of Carolina’s fifth straight loss — and the star pass rusher shrugged his shoulders.

“After this game,” Burns said, “ain’t much to say.”

Questions abound after losses, as those seasons attest, and they get more and more dire after each one. One that many might be asking at this point this year: Is it time for Young to take a back seat — temporarily — to veteran backup Andy Dalton?

...

But Young’s lukewarm day doesn’t dilute the fact that the Panthers looked the most explosive in the one game where Dalton was behind center. With Young nursing an ankle injury, the 35-year-old NFL veteran threw a career-high 58 passes and notched two touchdowns en route to a 37-27 loss.

Frustration obviously building.

It was time to stick with Dalton after Bryce struggled early on and Dalton looked a lot better in Seattle. Milk the ankle excuse. Ride Dalton until the bye and see where we are. He probably tails off considerably and you use the bye to get Bryce fully ready after some weeks of learning from the bench without the pressures of playing. If we somehow manage a respectable record and Dalton is playing well keep riding the Red Rifle until the wheels fall off. But once you went back to Bryce now I think you're committed to it. If you sit him at this point without an injury excuse the entire football media is gonna be screaming BUST and it's going to put even more pressure on the kid.

When they signed Dalton I thought it was a great signing in part because there was no way the fan base would want him to start over Bryce, even if he had some rookie struggles.

Needless to say, this season has been worse than most of us imagined and now we're faced with exactly that.

Dalton does give us a better chance to win right now but we need to develop Bryce.

They lose either way. Play Bryce and keep proving the obvious or play Dalton win a game or 2 which just makes option one look that much worse.

There are much larger decisions within the organization that need to happen first for that one to possibly carry anything good attached to it so just keep playing Bryce so there can be no doubt about what he is and keep the Dalton option open for the near future.

Let Bryce play it out. I doubt he will get better but what will we get with Dalton under center? One or two wins, maybe? This team is fuged either way, but maybe something clicks for BY and he begins to look like a decent QB. And Panthers need this season (and next) to decide if he’s The Guy or else they’ve wasted even more time finding someone who can lead them at QB.

If we start Dalton to help us beat Steichen/AR's Colts and Ryans/Stroud's Texans, then they might as well just throw in the hat on Bryce.  That would look really bad on the org's part, from the fans' perspective, and from the media.  Losses all around.  Let Bryce take his bumps like a man and grow.  If we shut him down, it's too soon, you'll de-acclimate him, and you take him out at a low.  That's just not smart.

What exactly is Dalton gonna do for this franchise? What a stupid article. Who even is this guy?

Nobody is gonna throw a parade if we win a couple games with Andy Dalton and wind up 2-15.

The point of this year (and now moreso than ever) is to evaluate whether or not we completely whiffed on #1 overall.

The 2024 first round pick is a sunk cost. It can't help the Panthers now. Playing Bryce as much as possible to get a good a look to decide if he has enough talent to justify building around him with talent is now the paramount concern of this season. There is no reason to play Dalton unless Bryce is legitimately injured.

    • He can say what he feels, but he's not saying "the previous year, the team wasn't very good" he directly called his teammates out and in a way that is flat-out not true. "You are your record"? Oh ok, he's only had 3 winning seasons, but in my mind he isn't a loser, and I bet he isn't in his either - cause football is a team sport and wins and losses are on the team, even when one really bad player (Jimminy Pickles) can basically screw over everything.  And this comes on the heels of his thing about the MVP, which is fine, but also selfish. His teammates consistently went to bat for him... Just feels like he's more about himself.
    • Good point--I think this draft is great for us at this time--At the top of the draft, the DT (DEs/NTs in 3-4) are loaded.  The Edges are deep.  We need to double dip there--hoping to move back so we can add three players to that pool.  In free agency, if I were Morgan, I would focus on DBs and  ILB--fix the back end of the defense.  If he signed a S, CB, ILB, and TE, it would be cost effective.  In the draft, DE, Edge, and WR should be the priorities.  After that, OL Depth, QB depth, DB depth, RB depth.  My Free agent Targets:  TE: Juwan Johnson, Saints.  29, had over 500 yards with Saints. S: Julian Blackmon, Colts.  He will be one of the top free agents--gonna cost us, but not like an edge or WR. ILB: Tyrel Dodson, Dolphins.  80 tackles on just 854 snaps--under 27 years of age. CB: Mike Jackson, Carolina.  He is 28 and had 3 picks and was on the field at all times.  68 PFF score. NT:  best available for Evero's system.
