Three coaches -- assistant quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, special-teams coach Kevin O'Dea and defensive quality control coach Brian Smith -- had their contracts expire and won't get them renewed. Assistant defensive backs coach Doug Plank was fired. And pass-rushing consultant Chuck Smith left to become defensive line coach at the University of Tennessee.

Jets coach Rex Ryan said it's just part of the business.

Everything I've read on O'Dea says "stay away".

Jets special teams have been coached in part by O'Dea and in part by Mike Westhoff. Both have the title (one is "coach" and one is "coordinator") but the exact roles are unclear. Westhoff has an excellent rep but has had a lot of health issues. My guess is he'll get the Jets ST job solo next season.

Updates on a couple other guys (see the original)

maybe a little, in that he's always an over-reaction.

Also your statement of special teams coaching tree? Don't forget Dick Vermiel, Marv Levy, and John Harbaugh were special teams guys.

Granted, but they built their trees as head coaches. Difference with Bisaccia is that his guys have gone on to head coaching roles while he stayed where he was.

(that could be positive or negative for him, depending on how you look at it)
