Too little Too late firing Crossman. April has been nabbed

Crossman needed to go, simple as that. It was not a smart move to get rid of him, any coach with a brain would have... what would have been half way smart is doing it and then signing April which the Panthers once again, fail to muster up the sense to do.

Hiring April would be a good idea but before we say it is a good or bad thing, lets see who they do pick.

i think it the simple fact he returned 1 in 08, 2 in 07....i think pretty much explains it. Give a guy like that consistant reps and he would break huge runs......

Crossman is the elephant....he deserves to be fired. My only point in there is more steps to take and that isn't an automatic fix. I don't get a giddy and happy of a coach firing thinking it solves problems.

I said the same thing when Meeks came in. 1 year of Meeks and people now want to act that everything is peachy.....Fox has his thumb print on everything. Trgo has some impressive years in a vaccum. Fox's pros are also his cons.....and I expect the Meeks D to see the same ups and downs as Trgos did.

That is where we disagree. Special teams change every year because you have a small core group of guys and supplement with role players and backups. They also change during the year because as some backups become starters due to injury they drop off special teams and other step up. So personnel isn't the biggest issue. It is getting them to play as a unit and produce no matter who is out there. That is the job of the coach. Say what you want but some teams have good special teams every year no matter who is there while others like us don't. What is the difference? The coach.

Also, would April have even been willing to come here under a one year contract (fat chance since he was being so highly pursued)? Or, would everyone rather we sign Fox to an extention just so we could have gotten him? It's easy for people to say we should have gotten his guy or that guy, but sometimes that's not realistic, and you just have to be happy to be moving in the right direction.

Good point. We assume that April would want to be here. Maybe we did pursue him and he said no.

Reeders thinks we could just promote

Rodgers is a viable candidate if the Panthers hire from within.

Rodgers returned to the NFL in 2009 after spending the previous season as the special teams coordinator at Kansas State after working with the San Francisco 49ers special teams for five years.

Sorry but promoting someone who was under Crossman would pretty much blow my mind as far as terrible decisions go.

I mean, what position does he hold now? Unpaid intern? Jeez.

There are plenty of coaches to choose from who would be better than Crossman. And as Mr. Scot has pointed out, there are a few that would be pretty darn good pickups.

I think that what you've been missing, is that most likely, the new coach will actually be able to evaluate talent for his special teams, whereas Crossman appeared unable to.

This is why good coaches can change a segment of our team for the better, and where bad ones can drag them under.

again, Crossman sucked....but I am pretty sure he could evaluate what he was given to work with and came to the conclusion he was screwed this season......as we all could.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Fox called legendary special teams coach Bobby April on Wednesday night to see if he was interested in the opening here. But by the time Fox called, April already had agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles,

By waiting nearly two weeks after the end of the season to make their move, the Panthers might have cost themselves a shot at April.
