A thought going into next season

I liked we when we played Brayton in the middle of the D-line and sometimes had Johnson alongside him. I also liked the 3-3-5 look we showed at times against the Vikes and Giants, it seemed to generate more pressure. I think Brayton is alot more atheltic than I thought and having a guy who can play anywhere on the D-line is a luxury.

^^^^^^big fat ol' reason why we HAVE to re-sign brayton.

charles johnson is another one i can see doing the same thing. both those guys give a lot of solid pressure up the middle on passing downs.

they are pretty much the reason that damione lewis is expendable. we need to have big fatty NTs. UTs...not so much. at least not as much depth is needed there. i would like to keep lewis around next year to show tank and irvin the ropes but if i had to choose one of those three (lewis/tank/irvin) to go i would choose lewis because of the $$ and the long term.

i could just as easily make an argument for tank leaving and lewis staying, though. having experience there is a really nice thing and he hasn't given us much problem as far as injuries are concerned.

i can see us keeping:

kemo (for just one year @ $750k) It wont just be 750K, thats his base salary, there will also be a team option bonus in March of 9.3 million. I dont see us keeping kemo.

thomas

leonard

tank

irvin

peppers

johnson

brown

brayton

lewis and hillee i see getting the boot.....although, if we trade pep away, do we keep taylor or do we go after a vet like seymour or even chike okeafor?

we have him and lewis both under the same terms. lewis gets $755k and kemo $750k. both have identical option bonuses. both are under contract for next year regardless of whether they are given the option bonus. that option is for only if we elect to keep them longer than the one year remaining on their contract.

NT being the premium that it is, kemo is much more valuable to us than lewis and well worth the 750k. i don't see us picking up the option on either but if we did, that bonus should be spread out over the life of the contract cap wise though the could pay it all up front next year being uncapped if we wished.

I like Daminon Lewis as a back up. As a starter I want to punch my TV.

Kemo may stick around but lets not forget that he ruptured his acelis(sp?) tendon and the chances of him being able to start by training camp is probably less than 50/50. It wouldn't surprise me if he still isn't 100% by the start of the season.

Tank Tyler is a nice rotation guy that could be a quality starter if needed. But that doesn't mean he is the ideal starter. Same thing for Lenoard Lewis.

Hollis Thomas is the best DT we have on the roster right now but his age is the draw back. Having to go through training camp and a full 16 game schedule might result in a different level of play.

I really like what we have at DE and Brayton is so underrated its laughable. Aside from Brown we have 3 DE that can play any position on the d-line. Brown can play both sides of the line. We are set at DE.

DT, it just seems like the Panthers have a bunch of okay players but are waiting to find those starters who will be dominant.

Best case senerio is that Tank Tyler and Lenoard Lewis emerge as those types of players but that is a risk. I know everyone is eyeing the QB, WR and TE positions for the draft but to me trying to find another Kris Jenkins, but with a better attitude, would be just as important an option.
