Sean Payton is 2009 NFL Coach of the year

New Orleans’ Sean Payton has been named NFL Coach of the Year by The Sporting News. He beat out Indianapolis’ Jim Caldwell for the honor, and this one is well deserved. Payton took a team that underachieved last year and got it to achieve. He won his first 13 games and, as I’ve said many times before, I believe Payton grew tremendously as a head coach this year.

I think these awards should be given after the playoffs. He finished the season on a 3 game losing streak and if Arizona comes in and blows them out then he cleary was unable to make changes as the opposing teams did down the stretch against his 13-0 team.

On the reverse, if the Cardianls head coach leads them to a second straight Super Bowl, how about acknowledging him?

I agree completely.

I know his team didn't win as many games as the Saints, but I think Rex Ryan deserves some consideration for getting his team to the playoffs his first year as well.

Payton and his Saints had a great year, but he's also had some very mediocre years with one of the league's best offenses in the past. I realize, however, that this is a yearly award and not representative of the coach's entire career.

Pitiful....can't even give a compliment without a 'but' following it.

Payton's a good coach. I just think the award should be given after the Super Bowl and in light of the full season.

How's that pitiful? Did I hurt your feelings or something?

you can't just say "well done" eh? Has to be some sort of shot against him...
