Please Educate me on the possible "Lockout"

Sure as hell sounds like a strike to me. And if thats the case why do the fans all seem to be taking it lying down. I'll be effing outraged. When the NBA went on strike I got rid of my gear and never watched another game. And I was a fanatic.

A "strike" is initiated by the workers (they refuse to come to work) a "lockout" is initiated by ownership/management (they won't allow the workers to come to work). At the moment, the NFL owners are threatening to lock out the players if they don't come to terms on a new CBA.

The way things look right now - it's pretty likely to happen. Jerry Richardson is the chair of the ownership committee that's negociating with the players and he's holding off on extending Fox's contract or hiring a new coach for 2011 because there's a good chance there could be no NFL in 2011.

The lockout appears a real concern and something being driven by the owners. I hope they realize that it will hurt the NFL moving forward just like it did to baseball.

Well, I'm sure they aren't doing it because they are evil; they obviously have some real concerns (to be truthful I didn't look at the links and I don't know what their concerns are).

Look at them and get back with me. They do have concerns, it is money. They believe they have given up too much money during the last CBA and want it back. The owners are the one in control of this and driving the lockout. I don't believe they are evil, they want more of the money. This is the business version of chicken.

What's wrong with wanting more money? They feel they gave up too much and they want to take some back. It is they who finance the whole charade anyway. It's not like the players don't make a ton of money already anyway.

I just don't get the need for agents and the need for unions in the NFL.

That is exactly how the owners feel. You obviously understand their side of the argument. There are two sides though.

Considering they hired one of the minds behind the NHL lockout, I'd say they're probably all drinking the kool aid.

Problem is, the NFL is already the US's most popular sport. The brand has nothing to gain by locking out.
