Why I believe Jake will retire this offseason.

Jake is too competitive to even think of retiring right now.

He rode benches and played in Europe and did all kinds of things before getting a shot......he knows better than anyone that the position is hard to get and keep. You better believe he has talked repeatedly to the the Kurt Warners of the league (who he is actually pretty good friends with) and will comeback ready to fight.....regardless of where he is on the depth chart week 1.

Umm doesn't he get the $13 million if he retires or not? I thought no matter what happens we are on the hook for the same amount...

That's correct. No matter what he is going to get his money one way or another, even if he is cut.

I think most people are missing the real point of my post. I don't think this will end up being a Jake decission but rather one made for him by the Panthers. He could also elect to just get cut.

However it unfolds, I don't see Jake being a Panther in the 2010 season.

It doesn't make sense that he would get all of the guaranteed money if he retired in the 2nd year of the contract, there is no way they would structure a contract like that. It is probably based on a percentage, based on how far he is into the contract. If he retires before the contract is over he would more than likely lose most of it unless he was in his last year.

What do you think "guaranteed money" means?

well they did

I would have to see the contract to believe that if he retires this year he gets all of the guaranteed money. If that were the case players would be retiring all over the place. Why not? work hard, sign a huge contract then retire in the second year and you still get all of the guaranteed money without having to play. That would be very stupid for an organization to do that. Maybe they did but that would be stupid to do on any contract that is signed.

The way I understand it guaranteed money is protection if the player is: Released or cut, or if he has a career ending injury. I am almost positive this would not include retirement.

I don't see Jake retiring, and I don't think it has anything to do with money. He's a healthy guy, and he's not so old that he won't get a look from other teams if he is cut loose. I think he wants another shot to salavge his reputation and legacy, either here or with another team. His days as a starter may be over (I hope they are here), but if he is a backup anywhere and the starter gets hurt, Jake may have his chance. If Jake would ONLY learn, at this late stage in his career, to look his receivers off and not zero in on his primary receiver from the snap, he could be a good QB again. He was once....

I believe that he will not retire also. It all depends on who is coaching the Panthers next season if Jake will be with the Panthers but he will probably playing somewhere if not here.

On a side note if Jake does start next year I will refuse watch or go to a game until he is benched.

Typical of fairweather fan. They only root for their team when a player they don't like is playing. If people are going to be a fan of the team, then stick with them no matter what. Not saying you have like or agree with the situation, but you should stand by your team. Otherwise, you're not rooting for Stewart, Smitty, Beason, etc. either with not wanting to watch them play beside Jake.

Best outcome: Jake retires and works on as a QB coach to make the money he would have gotten as a player.

Fix for you.
