How Good is Hurney?????

Really..

He has done a decent job over the years, BUT he also hasn't done what he has needed to too put us over the top..

If you look at his history here he has TWICE left this team stranded in the offseason without making any moves to get better.

We took years to get another RB

We have yet to find a compliment to Steve Smith since 2005

We still are searching for a KR/PR

He has a history of being "reactive instead of "proactive"

We have a HISTORY of going into the season thin in very key positions.

He has mortgaged our last 2 first round picks (sign of desperation and that he is not sure how secure his job is)

He has drafted players over the years in positions we did not need help, only to get through the draft and FA still looking for answers, while those players we drafted dont make the team or ride the bench.

He has done very little to improve at the QB position (moore should be considered a surprise- he was never thought to be a sure deal)

He has kept us cash strapped with our Salary Cap and unable to make big moves to bring in solid B/U's at key positions.

Over the years we have been soo thin at depth that the very moment someone gets hurt our team is in trouble..

So with all this considered, and my complete OPINION of his ability to keep this team competitive, how good of a job has he REALLY done?

What say you?

My BIGGEST Concern with the mentality of Hurney is his process of allowing us to go into 2 separate seasons WITHOUT improving the team in any way.

Both in 2004 and 2009 we made no changes and towed the line of "21 of 22 RETURNING- Super Bowl bound"..

One would think that 2004 would have been a lesson, but Hurney still allowed us to be spread thin in 2009 with no changes to improve...

It seems the only time he does much is when the fanbase is outraged and loud enough that he can not escape the criticism...

I know this season sucked, but I'd rather blame Delhomme.

It's easier and it makes sense.

easier YES- but the problem was there was no REAL B/U (in Fox's mind) behind Delhomme that he had enough faith in to BENCH Delhomme. (especially after the Buffalo game)

If there would have been a quality QB that the FO had INVESTED some money in they would have had that kid out there a lot sooner than when Moore was given a Chance.

Its good to know Moore can handle himself, but the fact that he was an undrafted practice squad player was the biggest reason Delhomme was allowed to screw up as much as he did.

I could have sworn the reason was that Fox is a dumbass and doesn't know poo about picking quarterbacks.

Am I wrong?

Nobody was complaining last season when we went 12-5 using the same personnel. I don't see how Hurney f**ked up just because this season didn't go as expected. Jake Delhomme completely broke before, during, and after the Arizona game, and Fox's decision to keep him as starter is what cost us this season. I like to believe that it really is that simple.

Hurney may make some bonehead move like paying some of our players too much money than they deserve, but he also got us some good players in the Draft. Getting Stewart was one of the best decision he ever done in the Draft for us. Otah, Captain, etc. as well.

Stewart and Otah- YES

BUt even the Raiders have drafted great players.

With 7 picks its hard NOT TO draft at least 2 quality players.

I dont think you can say that Captain is "great" yet... Maybe after next season..

One thing is certain, he has disregarded the most important position on our roster for his entire tenure with the Panthers.

    • Remember our cap only counts the highest 51 contracts.  Many of these guys could be had for near or vet minimum contracts.  Cutting those contracts has no real cap ramifications.  Many of these guys played too much last year and didn't serve the role of depth players.  Even though they didn't perform as starters, they could serve a valuable depth pieces.  If we draft well, get healthy, and sign a few quality free agents, many would be in position to play a part of this team that serves both well.   Take a look at this link and you will see some interesting stats in regard to playing time.  FYI, Xavier Woods played 100% and Mike Jackson played nearly 99% of defensive snaps.  They were the only two players above 95%.  Hunt was the next highest at 93% and he missed the final game. Unrestricted FA's QB Andy Dalton - I like him, but we could get someone like Cooper Rush or Minshew for the same $$$$ we are paying him. C Austin Corbett - Incentive laden and team friendly C Brady Christensen - top swing OL pay replace Yosh Nijman TE Tommy Tremble - Lock him up now, multi-year cheap.  He's not even 25.  He will get much better. TE Ian Thomas TE Feleipe Franks - ST minimum deal WR David Moore - minimum deal RB Mike Boone DE DeShawn Williams - minimum deal (PS?) OLB Cam Gill LB Shaq Thompson - only if it is a minimum with incentives.  Think late career TD or Jeremiah Trotter.  Player coach CB Mike Jackson - He's going to cost more than we think, but keep the man!! CB Caleb Farley - minimum deal to prove it if he is FINALLY healthy S Xavier Woods S Jordan Fuller S Nick Scott S Sam Franklin - not breaking the bank.  He is ST only. S Lonnie Johnson P Johnny Hekker - if the price is right K Eddy Piñeiro LS JJ Jansen - Can't remember a bad snap over the past 10 years.  According to Google is hasn't happened since 2010.  Resign tomorrow. RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS  C Cade Mays - 3 million right of first refusal. WR Deven Thompkins - minimum deal RB Raheem Blackshear - minimum deal.  I like him, but he didn't show much when given his shot on offense. WR Velus Jones Jr. WR Dan Chisena - minimum (PS) EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENTS DE LaBryan Ray - It's cheap, bottom roster PS guy LB Chandler Wooten - It's cheap, bottom roster PS guy
    • Maybe he has grown, but his play calling/style was AWFUL when he was here. Please don't try to remember this with rose colored glasses after the fact.  Your average fan could predict the plays at home most of the time. We were not running an NFL offense and it 100% showed.  Glad he is doing well for himself, but the decision to let him go at the time was 100% right.
    • And then there's this... I c certainly don't feel like parting with Canales, but the silly, speculative part of me wonders what we could get for him 😄
