Fox can Void 2010 year

Good. I like Fox as the coach. Getting professional players to play the last 3 weeks of a season with passion, when the games are meaningless, takes a great motivator.

I expect Foxy to be Carolina for a long time.

It would have been good if he could have "motivated" them to play earlier...and "motivated" them to win enough games to get to the playoffs. That would have been impressive.

I think the best thing about the Panthers under Fox's tenure is that the Panthers are a feared team throughout the league. Sure our records means we have had varying degrees success, but we have always intimidated other teams. Although it may not seem like it to those fans in Carolina, many of my friends and colleagues around the U.S. tell me Panthers are respected.

No team in the NFL circles the Panthers as a "gimme" at the beginning of the season (anymore).

Why? Because they know Fox's teams are going to run the ball hard and play physical defense.

Fox is a good coach and we should lock him up w/ long term deal before it is too late.

I agree that Fox has brought Carolina to respectability. But I am starting to liken this situation to the San Diego situation a few years back. They had a 14-2 year then lost their first playoff game. Schottenheimer was fired and they brought in Norv Turner. They already had a winning team and all the talent was in place, they just chose to bring in a new coach because the old one was inconsistent, especially in the playoffs. Fox is inconsistent and is very conservative, to the point of frustration. I think if a new, more aggressive head coach was brought in, with all the talent on the team, a Super Bowl would be far more likely. Right now, Carolina is crippled by how conservative Fox coaches. It seemed earlier in his career he was more aggressive.

Sounds like typical passive Panthers front office BS. We want to fire you, but we're too big of a bunch of pussies to actually do it, so we'll hope you just go away. Grow a sack JR and make a move!

JR=the most passive owner in pro sports.

Charlotte, NC=an atmosphere/region that doesnt demand a consistent winner.

If Im an owner that has local ties here and doesnt want the burden of having to put a competitive product out there year after year, this atmosphere is a wet dream. Any other market would've starting holding ownership accountable YEARS AGO.

Why? It's smart. If Fox wants to go then he can go easily and JR will not have to pay him. It's that simple man. Obviously they are just giving Fox the opportunity and don't mind if he coaches out his last year.

Its the right move I just don't think its going to work. I have a feeling that we will be in an extremely tough spot next year with a coach that goes 11-5 or 12-4 and makes the playoffs. He will be praised throughout NFL-land for being one of the best coaches in the land and IF there isn't a work stoppage he will get a contract extension with the Panthers...which sucks considering he will probably go 8-8 the following season.

Its a never ending cycle. At some point you have to make a move like the Chargers did and fire a coach that had a great record in order to get someone in there that will do what you want them to CONSISTENTLY.

As far as JR being "off the hook" for 6.5 million bucks...The Carolina Panthers franchise was worth 1 BILLION dollars this time last year. JRs annual player expenses was 124 million dollars (roughly 12% of total value). I don't think that an extra 7 million dollars for one year is too much skin off his back. I think he can manage a 5.5% increase in salary payments...

Just because it's valued at 1 billion doesn't mean they have that much available in cash and such.

as I was sitting on the shitter I was thinking....

what jobs are left out there that Fox would take over this one?

Mangini is staying

Carroll is going to Seattle

I dont think Fox is stupid enough to take the Oakland job

so whats left, Buffalo right? so you think that job is more attractive then staying here for another year making 6 million and having a team with the talent to make it to/far into the playoffs? I dont think so, Fox is staying.

I wanted him gone after the 2007 season, but at this point I am willing to let it ride another season because, frankly, there seems to be no other choice, he is going to be coaching here, lets just hope Moore is starting and we get some help at WR. I have hope for next season either way, we have the talent and if Jakes not in there throwing games ( and the D remembers how to tackle EVERY game ) I could see them being 10-6.

Wow...reading through this thread was...interesting?

First of all, this is "smart" from a business standpoint yet foolish from a "football" standpoint.

JR is basically throwing away the 2010-2011 season. If JR doesn't believe Fox "gives us the best chance to win", then he should get rid of him.

Agreed. Fox has never lost the team, but next year might be a different story.

I'm not going to say Fox gives us the best chance of winning but he does give us a chance at a good season. It's apparent JR is not willing to loose Foxes salary and pay Cowher the big bucks in the same year. If that's the case Fox is a reasonable choice (as long as Jake does not start the season).

Next year JR will right the ship.

I think it is pretty amusing that all of these "talking heads" on ESPN, Sirius etc. keep saying that Fox would find another head coaching job immediately if he left Carolina. I am beginning to wonder if maybe the league is finding out what we already know about him. Seems like he and Julius Peppers have something in common...that is they think they are much more in demand than they may actually be in reality.

He couldn't find anybody to pay him more than $6.5 million for one year. There's a shocker. At least we know why he was so snippy.

I can't remember the exact details, but ESPN showed a list of the highest paid NFL Head Coaches (while discussing Pete Carroll's deal), and Fox wasn't in the top 4 (he wasn't even listed). They showed Jeff Fisher and Jack Del Rio as #3 and #4, at only $5.2 million a season.

Could this mean that the $6 million figure for Fox is over stated?

Fox is going t be here unless someone like Cleveland gives him crazy money. Richardson is allowing Fox to void his last year so he can look for along term deal if he wants. That kind of loyalty is why coaches and players want to play for the big cat. I wouldn't be surprised that if Fox leaves we don't replace him from within. Fox was not a household word until he came here. Wouldn't be surprised if we hired Meeks or Skipper to replace him just like we discusssed in an earlier thread. As for Fox losing the players, they realize that Fox could be gone after next year so they are auditioning for the next coach as well.

I'll ignore every post in the thread except for the OP and say this:

1. These articles that keep popping up ARE THE SAME reports just with different vocabulary that intends to rile up a fan base and simply make a story. Anyone who read that article and assumes we are in a different situation compared to a month ago is an idiot. ;)

2. We should be lucky to have an owner like JR when you compare him to the rest of the league, but you don't need to act like he an untouchable man who doesn't make mistakes. People always bring up the Polian situation, but get over it. There was some serious tension between the two and they couldn't work together.

3. As fun as it is to fantasize about where Fox can depart to...I'm giving it 92.8% that he will stay.
