pressing at the line of scrimmage

is the fact that our db's don't ever press at the line of scrimmage (esp when its 4th and 4) our scheme or to cover up some coverage liabilities?

that is just Foxy football. Keep it in front of you, let the opponent slowly drive down field, and hope THEY make a mistake.

Yet we're NFC South Champs with a 12-4 record, first round bye in the play offs and hosting the first play off game.

Seems to me that something's working.

We're tied for 10th with passing TD's allowed. I don't care about how many yards we give up, as long as we keep them out of the endzone.

I don't either till the defense is exhausted from being on the field too long.

theyve been pressing a lot more lately and it obviously hasnt been working. Lucas just gets toasted.

We don't have the best cover safety's if you haven't noticed. We cant afford to let the corners play too much bump and run for fear of one getting by you.

I love jamming at the line, but we need an Ed Reed type player to help out behind the line.

In case anyone was wondering here is what I think is the problem.

We sit 5-10 yards off hoping to get a pick from a check down caused by front 4 pressure. Without someone to colapse the middle of the pocket, the front 4 isn't getting the pressure we need to cause this. Thus WR's get to run longer developing routes, which 9/10 times find holes in our zone coverage. This year we have relied on speed rushers (Brayton/Lewis) to push the middle. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. Kemo can sometimes do this on 1st and 2nd down, but he is best as a run stopper, not a rusher. Once we get our DT's back to 100%, and start pushing that middle again, our coverage will improve.

The reason Lucas is getting burned lately is directly related to this. Lucas plays physically, where Gamble is more comforable in the Zone (not to say he can't JAM when he needs too). When the pressure is missing AND Lucas can't get the JAM on the WR he gets toasted, like 90% of CB's not named Aso/Baily would.

If you are blitzing safeties, you can't press coverage. So people say the Panthers need to blitz more and they do. Now people say they need to press coverage but you can't blitz if you are doing press coverage with no safety help. At least get your stories straight first.

Winnah winnah chicken dinna

Our safties play pretty deep IMO, this is to mask their coverage lackings.

Our defense this year has given up 30+ points in 4 games, and 20+ points on 6 other occasions.

That's a total of 10 games of 20+ points......what was this talk about

"i don't care how many yards they give up as long as they don't give up points"?

I'm not sure what team you have been watching all season, but we have given up a ton of points.

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
