Wow. I feel bad for Jake too, regardless of the money, the guy is a competitor and wants to be out there. It's just obvious he isn't what he used to be... I hope we can bring him in as a coach when he's done, he did a lot of great things for our franchise in his prime and I appreciate all of it... It's sad, but that's the nature of the business.

When Brady supplanted him, Drew Bledsoe was traded in the offseason.

Pennington was released when he was benched in favor of Kellen Clemens and then when Favre was brought into the Jets.

Leftwich was benched in favor of Garrard and was then cut before the next season began.

Jake Plummer was traded in the offseason when he was benched in favor of Jay Cutler.

Bledsoe was released after being benched in favor of Romo, although he was only with the Cowboys for two seasons.

I mean...this just doesn't happen. Every other situation like the Panthers are in currently has led to the quarterback either being released, traded, or retiring.

Good examples, but I think Jake is a totally different bird. He doesn't have anything close the the ego that most of the guys you listed have - he's one of the most humble and down-to-earth former pro bowl QB's in the history of the NFL. The other important point is that Jake was not officially "benched" he was replaced due to an injury - so there are no hard feelings here.

It's pretty clear the Panthers have not given up on Jake, and if they are going to have to pay him 13 million for next year, then they might as well keep him around as a backup. As a side benefit, I think it will be good for Matt Moore to have Jake breathing down his neck next year...

Face it guys, Jake will be back next year and will be given an honest shot at the starting job. It's both the best and worst quality of the Panthers - they are loyal to a fault - which is why a player like Beason tanked his workout with the perrenial SB-bound Patriots to come play for us, so it has benefitted us in the long run.

Prime example was on our very own roster. Peete was benched in favor of Jake and stayed on as mentor the season after. Jake could be remembering that, so might stay on as backup if he doesn't get the start next year to help Moore progress as a QB.

The question to me is, do we really want him to? It's not like Jake is the best in terms of mechanics and decision-making here. I wouldn't be opposed to him staying or leaving, but you do have to keep that in your thought process.

True, but it did directly affect Jake his first season as our starter in a positive way, which was the intent of my post. Jake may accept the backup role due to this tidbit, remembering how important Peete's presence was for him becoming a starter.

Just saying...

Jake is a good dude.

Jake is big enough to help Matt I think, with prep and being a leader.

Jake is a good dude, but thats a scary thought.

"Okay, Matt if you get in trouble just throw the ball up high and let it float like a wounded bird and hope Smitty runs underneath it".

i heard somewhere, "Jake is a great guy, come over for dinner.. run for mayor, coach high school ball.. just don't be QB anymore".. i have to agree... except the dinner part..lol

He could afford to pay.

You wouldn't eat a free dinner with Jake?

He did a lot of great things for the team a few years ago, and I'm sure his leadership will be missed......statue?

Nah. Just have him replace that crappy QB coach that was with the Browns last year. I bet Jake's better than any QB coach with the Browns right now. :P

And yes, it's a shame to see him quite sad near the end of the video. He is just so compeitive with being a QB for a long time & then having it come to the end soon with having the worse season of your career ever & not winning a SB when you're so close got to be very hard on him there. No QBs want to go through this.
