On how disappointing this season was

“Probably as disappointed as I’ve ever been in my life at this team, given the expectations we had this year, given the roster I thought we had, given the way we started out and given the embarrassment of the last two weeks.”

On what he’s disappointed about

“Everything. I’m disappointed in everything. I’m unhappy at everybody. It’s just not acceptable to perform like that. There are 8-8 seasons and there are 8-8 seasons, but this one felt a lot more like 2-14 to me.”

On if he’ll be influenced more by what he saw late in the season than in the 5-0 start

“Well, I’m less than 24 hours after the end of the season, so I’m sure I’ll cool down at some point and we’ll try to make intelligent decisions going forward. And I’ll sit down with the coaches and general manager. We’ll do what we need to do to improve the team, but obviously I’m not very happy right now and they know that.”

On whether it was a lack of fight or pride

"A lack of mental and physical toughness and, quite frankly, a lack of effort over the last two weeks. That's just something I never expected to see from this group of players."

On what he'd tell the fans

"We're going to do what we need to do to improve the team. We're not going to leave any stone unturned."

On the coaching staff

"The status quo is not acceptable on any level. I'm not going to get into specific positions or anything like that, but we need to do something and I will be expecting (Coughlin and Reese) to give me their recommendations on what we're going to do and ultimately we'll approve it or not approve it."

On his theories why that was

"I don't know why. I know we had some injuries, but I don't think we had catastrophic injuries. There's no excuse for performing the way we performed over basically the last 11 weeks."

On what he'd do if Coughlin wanted to keep his coaching staff intact

"You'd like to let the head coach make the final decision on those things, but that would be a tough one to swallow. The status quo after what we just went through is just not acceptable."

Oh gee, doesn't this sound like the kind of poo I'm always saying on here? By one of the most esteemed front offices in the league?

now obviously the panthers look far from as bad a team as the the Giants looked going by the last 3 weeks of the season, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the Panthers looked piss poor for 2/3 of the regular season. And it does hold true that despite the poor finish, the statement is true in the NFL that you get what you desire, and if you shoot for mediocrity and you don't spread accountability out where it is needed, guess what, over the long run, you will get mediocrity, and that is what defines the Panthers as long as they've been players in the game. You all think that "glass half full" is the path to success in the NFL. Guess what, it isn't. And regardless of the past 3 weeks, the Panthers 2009 season has been a failure. Plain and simple.

:iagree:

The Giants look at 8-8 as a failure

We look at 8-8 as "it is what it is"

not to mention this is one 8-8 season off 4 straight playoff berths, 4 playoff victories, and one superbowl championship win.

If the Panthers could ever accomplish something like that and then go .500 afterwards, i don't even think our more passive fans would even give a poo about what happened.

I also read something off the star ledger this morning about what the players were saying and Shaun O' Hara I think it was commented that the way they played was a disgrace to the logo and to the owners and the fans.

when the f**k do we ever hear a panthers player saying something along those lines. I can think of one player that i could hear the words come out of his mouth

everything is "ho hum we just didn't execute and there were some good things we did and poor me blah blah blah"

but you have to remember that's how John Fox and this organization likes it. In front of the media, they don't expose too much of their emotions. Fox would never throw a coach or player under the bus. But behind closed doors and when the paparazzi lights aren't flashing, I bet there is anger, disappointment, and some heated discussion that we just aren't aware of.

I agree. I wish somebody in our organization would stand up and say they won't stand for this crap. I wanna hear from somebody so we, as the fanbase, can get some type of idea of what the hell the Carolina Panthers Org. is thinking.

or maybe they really just don't give a poo as much as they should

First of all, all 8-8 seasons are not the same. If we went 5-0 to start the season and finished 3-8 over the last 11 games it would be a disaster.

We did the opposite which was to start 4-7 and finish 4-1. And I am not hearing anyone happy with the season. I do hear folks optimistic with our last 5 game finish, but certainly no one is happy missing the playoffs.

Secondly lets see what they actually do to get better. Words and rhetoric about making changes when they lost their last 5 games are appropriate but only words.

Okay maybe not this year but twice before the panthers have done something like that, and two years in a row. In 2006 they started 4-2 and finished 4-6 and in 2007 they started 4-2 and finished 3-7. And i don't care to hear about the injuries.

Gotta agree with this.

I'm really glad we don't have coaches and players throwing each other under the bus.

I just don't understand what exactly it is you people want from this organization. Finishing 8-8 when we had the hardest schedule in the NFL and the injuries we had was nothing short of miraculous.

    • From the article: Starting last Thursday, the talk started to intensify of Johnson to the Raiders. Coincidentally, or not, that was the same day the Raiders fired G.M. Tom Telesco, clearing a path for the “alignment” that Johnson has prioritized with the front office. Not that Johnson would ask for Telesco or anyone else to be fired. If a team really wants Johnson, however, it needs to hear the clues and act accordingly. If the Raiders, as it seems, want Johnson, they have acted accordingly. Johnson, we’ve heard, emerged from his Raiders interview with positive feelings about the team and minority owner Tom Brady — who has taken a major role in the ongoing search for a new coach. ... Most recently, we’ve caught wind of a rumor that the Raiders have made a “massive” contract offer to Johnson. While it’s premature for offers to officially be made, given that they’ve yet to conduct a face-to-face interview with Johnson, the talk is out there that a big number is unofficially out there. Whether it’s credible or not remains to be seen. Owner Mark Davis isn’t exactly in the upper echelon of cash-rich NFL owners. With recent buyouts to the likes of Jon Gruden, Josh McDaniels, Dave Ziegler, Antonio Pierce, and Telesco, piggy banks might need to be busted open to blow the entry-level curve on Johnson. A “massive” deal also would ruffle feathers among the other owners, some of whom are obsessed with staving off a bidding wars for coaches, where there’s no salary cap and no franchise tag and the market could easily go haywire. ... But it’s more than money for Johnson. If he works for the Raiders, he has access to Brady. Regardless of the niceties of the rules, there’s also talk that they’ve spent plenty of time talking on the phone. They’re allowed to converse within the confines of Brady’s job with Fox. Although he can’t attend production meetings, Brady is allowed to talk to coaches and players about the games he’ll be working. And he’ll be working the Lions game this weekend. ... There’s currently no other destination that fits. Johnson has interviewed with the Raiders, Bears, Jaguars, and Patriots. The alignment he wants doesn’t exist in Jacksonville, and likely isn’t in play with the Bears. Unless the Cowboys (who blew their window to interview Johnson at any time before the Lions’ season ends because they didn’t interview him via Zoom last week) make a late run, it’s the Raiders or the status quo for Johnson. More and more people in league circles believe it will be the Raiders
    • I’m a Bryce fan, and he can definitely make throws with guys in his face. But watching taller guys play, you see times when they are completely surrounded and the OL is in their lap and they can see and throw over that. Bryce can’t make that play but it seems like he is moving out of the pocket before that happens which is what he should do.
