Breakout Player of the year?

I would hate to minimize what Thomas Davis was able to do, but playing WLB in the Tampa 2 is a recipe for insane stats. The position becomes more reactionary and athleticism based. I was really impressed by his production there, but there are a lot of guys that could produce in that spot.

My vote goes to Ryan Kalil on the offensive line. He did a good job last year but this year his play was incredibly good. He took that next step forward to become one of the best at his position in the league. With interior linemen usually being the biggest, slowest, sloppiest, but strongest on the field it's nice to see a guy that breaks that mold. Kalil is a bit undersized for the center position, but makes up for that with great technique. I think a big reason why our "cut back" running plays work so much is that Kalil is able to seal the back side and allow DeAngelo and Stewart to cut against the grain of the play.

I don't think we really had one single breakout player in terms of guys who were trash last year that turned into a good player or were good that turned great, but rather a lot of guys that stepped forward and a lot of guys that stepped back.

Guys that took a step forward in development:

Ryan Kalil

Thomas Davis

Captain Munnerlyn

Sherrod Martin

Charles Godfrey

Guys that took a step backwards:

Jake Delhomme

Richard Marshall

Charles Johnson

Charles Johnson's inclusion may be a shocker to some, but aside from his game against Tampa the first time he was not the factor that I expected him to be after last year's performance. He was "okay", but he didn't have the campaign that I expected him to have here. After getting 6.0 sacks last year, I thought he was on pace to step up into the 8 to 10 territory this year. Granted, he lost some snaps to Everette Brown on passing downs but still the improvement was not there for me.
