Bill Cowher = terrible passing game

I've noticed a couple things that people on this board seem to think. One is that Bill Cowher would be a great replacement for John Fox and the other is that John Fox is too conservative a play caller, and can't produce in the passing game.

For anyone who supports Cowher and criticizes Fox, you have no idea what you are getting into when it comes to passing the ball. Bill Cowher had one of the most godawful conservative passing attacks in the NFL throughout his tenure in Pittsburgh. Of all the things he brings to the table, finding and using a good quarterback is not one of the things Bill Cowher does as a coach. Here are the stats for the leading passer for every year Cowher was a coach in Pittsburgh from 1992-2006.

Name | Yards | TD/INT | Rating

Ben Roethlisberger | 3513 | 18/23 | 75.4

Ben Roethlisberger | 2385 | 17/9 | 98.6

Ben Roethlisberger | 2621 | 17/11 | 98.1

Tommy Maddox | 3414 | 18/17 | 75.3

Tommy Maddox | 2836 | 20/16 | 85.2

Kordell Stewart | 3109 | 14/11 | 81.7

Kordell Stewart | 1860 | 11/8 | 73.6

Mike Tomczak | 1625 | 12/8 | 75.8

Kordell Stewart | 2560 | 11/18 | 62.9

Kordell Stewart | 3020 | 21/17 | 75.2

Mike Tomczak | 2767 | 15/17 | 71.8

Neil O'Donnell | 2970 | 17/7 | 87.7

Neil O'Donnell | 2443 | 13/9 | 78.9

Neil O'Donnell | 3208 | 14/7 | 79.5

Neil O'Donnell | 2283 | 13/9 | 83.6

Those stats are anything but impressive, and are evidence that Cowher would not be able to do anything significant to improve the passing game. In fact, even Jake Delhomme from 2008 makes Bill Cowher's quarterbacks look bad. If you want Cowher in Carolina, be prepared to see the Panthers struggle year in and year out when it comes to the quarterback position. I don't think that is something anyone wants to see, and with the way the NFL is being played these days, a good quarterback is a necessity.

It amazes me that so many of those unhappy with Fox would like to see Cowher here. Cowher and Fox are far more alike than different.

Exactly. Bringing in Cowher would not cause some offensive miracle. If anything it would make it more likely Delhomme would start. The guy couldn't decide between starting Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart, or getting a new QB for god's sake.

Cowher has always been that way. He's always favored rushing. Steelers management/owners FORCED him to pick Roethlisberger, he didn't want him.

dr. cock and balls you are correct.....Cowher loved him some Kordell

Please do not bring in Cowher.. for God's sake.. I love the the 3-4 defense but we have a great group of players, and I do not want to go through the rebuilding process when we can win now. Give Fox one more year with Matt Moore at the helm, and I think this team can do some great things. If Richardson is set on a new head coach.. please not Cowher.. bring in McDermott.

You may have a point with this...BUT...the differences are good enough for me!

First 8 years at pitt ~ 6 winning seasons vs. 2 losing

Total ~ 11 winning seasons vs 3 losing and 1 .500 season

Thats right folks out of 15 seasons the man had a losing record in only 3!

So, while the passing game may stink WITH EITHER COACH I personally would like to have a coach that knows how to win in back to back seasons!
