It's a lot harder than it looks.

I know that.

And a lot more critical than one might think. One little mistake to throw off the timing of the punter or place holder can be disastrous

I can understand the timing and all, but what about the physical aspects? Like, distance and the placement (don't want to hike it too high or too low).

I know these questions sound stupid but I've always wondered why long-snapper is a discrete position.

A lot more goes into than one would think. Snapping the ball 7 or 14 yards (fg/punt) isn't that hard. What makes it hard is making a quick and accurate snap. There is a specific technique that all long snappers use to make the ball spiral like a pass. It's different than the shotgun where the center just kinda tosses the ball backwards. Just lobbing it back there would take to long. Mastering this technique is not that easy.

That, and it's a high pressure position. And you'll get crushed on a FG block every now and then.
