Trade Gross, Let Schwartz Start Next Year

Jordan Gross blows his knee out in camp. Then what?

I said sign a free agent T

Several problems here:

1. We know for a fact what we have in Gross. We have no idea what we have in that 2nd round pick. Yes it worked for the Faulk situation, but thats rare. So were risking an All pro for a complete unkown.

2. Lt's are a integral part of every snap on the offence. A WR may make a couple big plays (assuming there pretty good). But that wouldnt happen if the LT didnt give protection.

3. Your basing Schwatz is a worthy player after seeing him in not even half the season. Regardles that Magu is a good coach. He also has good players to coach.

4. Wr typically don't make a big impact till a couple years.

So simply put this is what you want. The panthers to trade there All pro LT who has a hand in every offensive snap in the hopes that we have a chance to get a WR who might be good in a couple years. To replace him we will have a player in his second year based on less then half this season.

Gross was an All-Pro LT last year. As soon as Schwartz had a false start or holding penalty everyone clammering for this would be back on Gross's jock. You don't know how good we have it with him until he is gone for the entire season...Just be happy we have a good backup.

The idea is good... you always want to see turnover from your team. It means the younger talent is replacing the old. This process of letting your veteran go for picks ensures you keep young talent on your roster. You tend to find this to be a problem if you cannot scout and find young talent worth their pay/potential.

If Schwartz were to step into the LT role successfully, then it would be a good thing to get rid of Gross.

We view our players like Peppers, Smitty, and Davis as irreplaceable because not so long ago did it seem we kept missing on our draft picks.

Fact is, we need to keep the Smitty's and Beason's because they bring that priceless commodity called leadership. I know some may find it funny to mention Smitty as a leader, but he has really stepped that up this year big time. Talented players just mean more draft picks in trade. Leaders would be key to resigning.

Of course, this is all in a cap room era. Without a cap, resign whoever.

So you place no blame on a bad QB who held on too the ball too long right it was all gross fault. Dude Gross is one of the better tackles in the league don't let Jakes bad play scew your opinoin.

Alot of that has to do with Jake blowing ass.

Other than Vincent, the rest of the line has either matched or significantly improved their play AND their statistics. Gross and Vincent are the only ones who have performed worse, Kalil has been one of the top centres in the league and come on leaps and bounds this year.

If the rest of the line is actually doing ok, then how does it fall ALL on Delhomme? People need to stop just making baseless comments and at least look at some facts.

Again, love Gross, think he is a very good OT and he should NOT be traded.

Most teams spend years trying to find a franchise tackle. We find two, and we want to throw them out. Not exactly our best plan.

Otah and Gross have a good five years as bookends for us. Otah potentially longer than that. Wharton and Khalil will be there for a while too. The only way our line breaks up is if we can't afford to pay them all. Duke Robinson is also a future RG to replace Vincent. Schwartz showing us what he has is just another nice option to have when the inevitable injuries occur on the line. You need guys like him that are flexible enough to play multiple line positions like Hangman was last year, but you don't pay them starter money and you don't make them starters.

We have done a fine job of evaluating the talent that is unable to be replaced and keeping it in house. Our offensive line is THE most cohesive unit on the team and if we start tinkering with that, then we've lost our minds. When your attack is run based and you have what you could argue are Pro Bowl or All-Pro caliber players at EVERY line position you simply do not touch it. You keep it until it no longer makes sense financially and appreciate the time you have with it. Luckily for us, Gross is locked up. Otah and Kalil are on entry level deals. Wharton is highly underrated around the league and the veteran Vincent is a reclamation project gone right. Having depth like Schwartz and Robinson is a fantastic luxury that not all teams have.

I think people forget how much of a headache it was to have people like Todd Steussie starting when he was well past his prime.
