Ron Rivera on the Bills' interview list

Report: Rivera on the Bills' interview list

Posted by Mike Florio on January 2, 2010 11:54 AM ET

Three years ago, Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera worked his way onto the "A" list for head-coaching vacancies via his mastery of the Tampa Two defense, which resulted in a Super Bowl appearance.

He didn't land a job at the next level of the coaching totem pole -- and he also was run out of Chicago, where the team's defense arguably hasn't been the same ever since.

Rivera landed in San Diego as linebackers coach for the team's 3-4 system. After defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell was fired during the 2008 season, Rivera scored the promotion.

So now the team runs a blended 4-3 and 3-4 approach, and Rivera's defense has sufficiently complemented Norv Turner's offense to propel the Chargers to a ten-game winning streak and a 12-3 record.

It has gotten Rivera back into the mix for head-coaching vacancies. Or, at a minimum, a head-coaching vacancy. With the Bills.

Per WGR 55 in Buffalo (via Kevin Acee's Twitter page), Rivera will be contacted by the Bills.

League rules permit assistant coaches with teams who have secured bye weeks to be interviewed for head-coaching positions, and Rivera could be interviewed as soon as next week.

Though interviewing Rivera would satisfy the Rooney Rule, he seems to be a legitimate candidate for the job -- especially since he wasn't interviewed before the job was even open.

--------

I hope if we are considering a change, we don't hesitate to bring in guys like Ron Rivera for an interview before they're locked up.
