Fox leaves, does Jake follow?

Take a look at our IR list.

Yes, roster spots are very valuable, none are expendable on players with no upside.

80 of them, get serious. This is all a red herring because you guys are afraid Jake might play again and you lobbied for years on this site to get rid of him. This is hardly about a roster spot. No one in their right mind would walk away from 13 million dollars and neither will the Panthers. All this wishful thinking is a load of crap. Jake will be in camp next year.

Fox will be here.. Jake will be cut if we are in an uncapped year. Because his cap hit won't mean anything to us. Great year to cut high priced underperformers.

Incorrect...

If Jake is cut this offseason, we are still going to have to pay him a total of 12.7M spread out over the next 3 seasons... We wouldn't be off the hook until 2012...

Sure, the money we'd have to pay him this offseason if we cut him might not hurt if it's an uncapped year, but 2011 and 2012 will...

Thanks for the article. It looks like if the Panthers pursue the option to supercede, and then cut him, they would immediately owe him $12.7 million in signing bonus. It would not be prorated. The only way it is prorated is if they cut him before March. Is this not how you understand it?

That appears to be the only difference between cutting him before March and superceding. They get to decide if they want to prorate his SB or pay him in a lump sum. Looks like the FO prepared themselves for this instance.

Problem for those arguing for him to be gone is that it isn't fact based but fear based. It upsets them to have uncertainty going into the offeseason. it doesn't matter that cutting him now makes no sense financially or from a football point of view. It is about wanting him gone at all costs no matter what so he can't ever play for the Panthers.

Sounds like a break-up of a relationship more than a fact based business decision.

No that is correct... I was misreading your intentions with your other statement apparently... I was under the impression you meant we could simply cut him at any point this offseason and not have any consequences in the future...

I'm glad you clarified though, as it made me go back and verify about the timeframe to supercede...

Look for Delhomme's release at the end of April/beginning of May... :)

That is what I am thinking, only because it's an uncapped year, we can cut him at the end of April/beginning of May, and not be effected by the cap hit. Kudos to Hurney for giving himself an out in a potential uncapped year. (If I understand it correctly).

I don't think spending a guaranteed 20 million dollar contract on a washed up QB is something to give Kudos for. He already had a deal in place that would have allowed us to evaluate him one more year. If they had left his original contract we could just let him walk after this season.

If they do the signing bonus of 10.4 then his 2.5 million salary it is the same and he is on the team as the backup if you need him. Plus you can cut him after 2010 with no consequence and have no obligations going forward, If 2011 is a lockout, you are out nothing.Any other backup will want a multiyear contract. His salary will become due and guaranteed either way.

The way I am looking at it is, extending Delhomme was a must because they had to free up cap room. So given the circumstance, I think it was a pretty saavy move by Hurney, in that respect. Sure it would have been great to let Delhomme's contract expire, but I don't think that was really an option with our cap situation last year.
