Realistic Draft Options for the Panthers

i would love to get benn. perfect guy to go with smitty. im still not sold he will fall to us. i would love arthur jones honestly, and if the jr dts keep declaring he might make it to us. like kdrh5, he is one of my fav dts (3rd tied with austin, behind suh and mccoy).

i am reserving judgement on thomas till after the bowl game and combine. cant argue that he makes big plays, yet he only runs what 3 routes, and gets alot of jump balls where he excels. he isnt CJ who did whatever he pleased, jump ball, or straight blow buy you, but he is still tallented (i remember he was a super freshman too).

i love briscoe. super hands, great size, baller day 1. but the whole speed game is a question. then again that didnt stop boldin or rice, but after the failed jarrett experament, i am a little more cautious when it comes to bigger but slower wrs.

i like virgil at cb. like him more than macho harris last year as a corner. he isnt a return guy though, but he has locked his side of the field down the last 2 years (had safety help last year). injuries and being a dumbass (didnt go to class missing bowl game) should drop him. he isnt a tall cb but gritty and tackles well enough. i could see him from the 4th to udfa. a guy i would love to pick up reguardless, i think he has the coverage skills to stick.

another possible lb prospect to groom........... kam chancellor. i cant quite decide if he can play ss or should slide down to wlb. big ss or a wlb with room to grow. he could project to be a guy like thomas davis bigger ss that has weak coverage skills, buts a great tackler and big hitter. he can get taken out of plays by backs and linemen (see 2nd half of gt game where johnson had rb bypass the lb to block kam instead). if we keep anderson around and let TD go, kam could take a year to learn the WLB position, as well as have a full year of pro strength and conditioning to get ready for 2011. that said, he could be similar to the usc safety the raiders took (bing) a few years ago, and not really have a nfl position though. he tackles well for a safety and is quicker than lbs. i expect he will have great triangle numbers, but i am not sold he can cover nfl WRs or RBs.

I can tell you know your stuff. I didn't put Kam as an option for us at Safety because he isn't fast enough, but with 10 extra pounds, he could be an effective weakside LB in a year or so.

I really like Briscoe as well.. I have gotten to see him play several times, because I am an Oklahoma fan, and he trashed on our secondary last year in garbage time. He may not run a fast 40 time, but the guy has very very good football speed. He actually reminds me of Anquan Boldin.. funny you should say that. Arrelious Benn reminds me of a Dwayne Bowe type with a little more speed. I would definately be happy if we got either one.

I really do think Benn will be available when we pick in the mid-2nd round. Unless he just has an amazing combine.. I believe he is the 8th WR on scouts boards right now, in a not so top heavy class. We have 2 sure-fire 1st round talents in Dez Bryant, and Brandon LaFell (whom I think will both be busts in the NFL).

Here are the top 11 WRs on most scouts boards:

1. Dez Bryant

2. Brandon LaFell

3. Mardy Gilyard

4. Jeremy Williams

5. Golden Tate

6. Damian Williams

7. Demaryius Thomas

8. Arellius Benn

9. Jacoby Ford

10. Dezmon Briscoe

11. Eric Decker

Let me start off answering that question with, I am a fan of Chris Harris.. I think he is a very good SS. However, I do not believe he fits the cover 2 scheme. I do believe Meeks/Fox will look to get a faster SS with better coverage skills. This will allow them to do more with their cover 2 scheme.. right now, Harris is more of a liability. Plus, the fact that Quintin Teal is not a quality backup.. he is a career special teamer. I do not believe a 3rd round draft pick will take Chris Harris' spot immediately, but I do think a faster, hard-hitting SS would make an impact for our team next season.

That Sounds like Sherrod Martin.;)

I like Aaron Webster outta Cincinnati. Good size at 6'2" 211 lb. He has the range to play center field but he can also come up and stop opposing teams in the run game considering he is top 5 on the team in tackles (43). He is a hard hitter and would make a excellent backup SS/special teamer and he could easily make into late 2nd day or go undrafted.

I think Harris is still good but it isn't like his irreplaceable I think Webster has more talent in coverage and brings the same kind of presence in the run game Harris brings.

I think we are need of an Strongside LB as well. I really like AJ Edds outta Iowa. He has great Size, 6'4 250, and great speed, high 4.4 or 4.5. And what makes him my favorite candidate is he is one of the best coverage Lbs eligible. He has 4 ints and 4 pass defended this season, along with 72 tackles. Edds just seems to get better each week in Iowa’s defense. He is very good at diagnosing plays. He is also a good tackler that squares up on his man and keeps the ball carrier from gaining any YAC. He is projected to go any where from the late 2nd to 4th round. In the 4th is where he has the best value for us.

Lol. Yea, it could be Sherrod Martin, but I don't think he has the ferocity of playing in the box that our SS requires. He he has great ball hawking skills, so I think he is a much better candidate of taking Godfrey's FS position. I just haven't seen the physicality from Martin yet.

I don't know anything about Webster other than my resources tell me he very well could go undrafted.

Edds reminds me of Nail Diggs actually, he would be a great pickup in the 4th round. Very good tackler, great is pass coverage, but he can't rush the passer worth a lick.. haha.

No need considering we run the Tampa 2. How often has Diggs blitzed? Because of this Edds will most likely fall to the 4th when IMO he should go higher. But thats why I love the Tampa 2 so much in todays NFL, personnel comes cheap.

I just get the feeling Webster is going to develop into a damn good SS. Good in coverage and in the run game. And despite losing 3 teammates in the secondary to the NFL this year Webster really picked up the slack. I think he will devolop into a fine starter one day.

We definately don't use Diggs in the pass rush too often. I like Edds in the 4th. Scouts are comparing him to Ben Leber, so they don't think he has much upside.. what you see is what you get basically.

I personally really like Dekoda Watson from FSU. Here is one scouting report:

Watson is a very athletic linebacker with excellent acceleration, speed and closing burst. He flies all over the field making plays and chasing down ballcarriers in pursuit. Scouts love his athleticism, competitiveness and ability to make impact plays, but they have concerns about his size and ability to make plays when he has to take on and defeat blockers.

I know why, he is an athletic freak. But a word of caution those freak athletes tend to underachieve in the NFL. Besides he fits best at WLB where we already have Davis. I think our SLB is the only LB position that needs to be upgraded.

I think Edds is faster and slightly better in coverage then Diggs and in the 4th would be a steal.

is davis better than 'spoon when we let him walk? i dont think so. if he isnt why would we not draft another wlb to replace davis for cheaper than resigning him (basicly what we did with 'spoon). also anderson has looked quite good at wlb in relief. i dont think anderson is close to davis athleticly, but it makes me wonder if we can get another athlete in like davis and mold him into a solid wlb, just like davis. i wouldnt mind a guy like watson to sit a year or 2 and get into a nfl strength program, but would still want kam as a WLB project (if he was there in the 4th, i would jump on him, freak athlete that imo needs a possition switch at the next level). now wlb is in no way a need, but it could be a bpa deal is somehow weatherspoon fell to the 2nd. i would hope we would either trade out or take guy that would will a bigger need.

I have regretted us letting Witherspoon go since it happened. Morgan over him was one of the worst decisions Fox/Hurney have made. Davis is finally becoming the player we all thought he'd be when we drafted him and now you want to let him walk?

I don't know what they will do but I know there is no way I would let Davis walk. Now if some team offered some great trade (like a good WR or multiple 1st day picks). If it is an untapped year he is a RFA and we get three tags anyway.
