Realistic Draft Options for the Panthers

I have a pretty good track record with guessing panthers picks, in my mock drafts. My best guess would be calling the Jon Stewart pick in December 07'. I also called Jeff King and Gary Barnidge in the exact rounds.

I think the most logical choice would be to address the offensive side of the ball with our first pick in the mid-2nd round. We need some playmaker WRs for our QB, especially if it's a young Matt Moore.

Here is a list of low round 1st and 2nd Round WRs that could be available when we draft.

Mardy Gilyard (Proj. 1st-2nd) Cinncinati

*Jr* Golden Tate (1st-2nd) Notre Dame

Jeremy Williams (1st-2nd) Tulane

*Jr* Damian Williams (2nd) USC

*Jr* Dezmon Briscoe (2nd) Kansas

Jacoby Ford (2nd) Clemson

*Jr* Demaryius Thomas (2nd) Georgia Tech

*Jr* Arrelious Benn (2nd) Illinois

I think if Arrelious Benn comes out, we would have to take him.. he has amazing KR ability, and he is a larger WR at 6'2" 220lbs with blazing speed. A perfect compliment to Smitty.

If Benn doesn't come out, I would have to pick Golden Tate if he were available, although his stock may boost to the 1st round after the combine.

--------------------------------------

With the 3rd round pick. I know many believe that DT is a huge need. But, the Panthers have stock piled DT's for next year, and have already given up a late round pick for Tank Tyler to the Chiefs.. and picking Leonard off waivers. I do not believe we will expend anymore resources on DTs this year. Especially with Kemo coming back. Therefore, the 2nd most pressing need our secondary.. I think we could use depth at the SS position with this pick. Let's face it, Quintin Teal isn't a capable backup.

Here is a list of low round 2nd and 3rd Round SSs that could be available when we draft.

*Jr* DeAndre McDaniel (2nd) Clemson

Darrell Stuckey (2nd-3rd) Kansas

Harry Coleman (3rd) LSU

Kurt Coleman (4th) Ohio St

Just some names to think about. It will be an exciting Pre-Draft, that is for sure. Lot's of theories will be flying around.

Alan Bailey, DT, Miami--jr--my favorite DT prospect, freak athlete, 3 technique guy, 6'4, 290, interior pash rusher, probably a great 40 time

Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse--injuries may drop him, second favorite DT prospect

Greg Romeus, DE--jr

Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss--injuries, 1st round talent

Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina--jr, honestly, i hope they dont draft him. top-15 talent, inconsistent

Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida-- probably a 1st rounder

Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State

Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee

Corey Wooten, DE, Northwestern--injured knee as a junior, but is 6'6, good player

Sam Acho, DE, Texas--third or fourth rounder, depth guy

Brandon Lang DE, Troy--never seen him play yet i keep hearing his name

Arrelious Benn,WR, Illinois--might go in the 1st

Brandon Lafell, WR, LSU--ditto

Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech--i think he's a beast, but he'll have to learn to run routes. he's 6'2, 220, and can run. Only if we sign a WR in free agency, though, but a ton of talent

Erik Decker, WR, Minnesota--i like him alot

Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cincinatti--i'm not crazy about him, honestly, but people know who he is, and he can return kicks

Jeremy Williams, WR, Tulane--returns kicks

Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State, and Walter Thurmond, CB, Oregon, can return punts, and Dante Wesley is a UFA so we may need another DB. Javier Arenas, Alabama, is probably the most well-known. We could use any of these guys on special teams and they all fit the cover-2, esp Arenas.

Javier Arenas is by far my favorite CB in the draft.. I think he is a 2-3rd round pick.. and I don't think he is a big enough need. But, he is a freaking beast.. I think he could be as good as Josh Cribbs returning kicks.

Id like for Demaryius Thomas to fall to the third or fourth.

And unlike a lot of people on this message board, I'm not in love with either Gilyard OR Golden Tate. I think people will fall out of love with Tate really fast once Dallas drafts him.

I always respect your opinion the most, Lout. And as far as I'm concerned, CB is always a need (as is WR).

I appreciate that. I have been doing this for a while now, and I have a lot of resources for college prospects.. so I always enjoy sharing my knowledge on this board.

CB is most definitely a need. How high of a need? I think I can name a few more pressing position's, only because of how well Captain Munnerlynn has been playing as of late. The Panthers are very pleased with his progression as the nickle. I do think we will draft another late round CB for depth. We could take one earlier if we feel we are getting a steal. But, I don't like to base my mocks on improbable scenarios.

I think the most probable selection here will either be Safety or OLB, depending on BPA..

Some OLB's that could be available in the 3rd round that fit the Cover 2 scheme:

Rodderick Muckelroy (2nd) Texas

Dekoda Watson (3rd) Florida St

Kavell Conner (4th) Clemson

I want to list Eric Norwood from South Carolina here, but I do not believe he fits our scheme, and also, I believe a 3-4 team will spend a higher pick on him. Dekoda Watson would be the most logical choice because we seem to like defensive players from that school.

-------------------------------------------------------

Just for the hell of it, here are some CBs in the 3rd and 4th Round that fit the Cover 2 defensive scheme that we might have our eye on:

Kyle Wilson (3rd) Boise St

Devin McCourty (3rd) Rutgers - This guy is a Ronde Barber clone.. he will be a great cover 2 corner.

Alterraun Verner (4th) UCLA

Stephan Virgil (4-5) Virginia Tech

The Cover 2 corners are slim pickens this year.. but there is one guy that really stands out. If Devin McCourty is available with our 3rd round pick, I think we would have to take him. However, there are several cover 2 corners at the end of the draft.. and the reason is because Cover 2 corners are generally slower that man-to-man corners.. so all the fast CBs go earlier in the draft.. thus leaving several "steals" at the CB position for Cover 2 teams. The Colts have an undrafted rookie starting at CB this year in Jacob Lacey, also their nickle is TJ Rushing, who was drafted in the 7th round.

The 2 games this year that Danario Alexander was truly "shutdown", was the Nebraska game and the Texas game. Both of Texas' CBs are juniors, and Nebraska's best CB is also a junior. Not sure if any of them are going to declare, but they are all in the 2nd-3rd round projection range. Amukamara is projected to be an Al Harris type, man-to-man corner. The two guys from Texas will look good in a cover 2.

*Jr* Prince Amukamara (2nd) Nebraska

*Jr* Curtis Brown (3rd) Texas

*Jr* Chykie Brown (4th) Texas

I could see us taking 2 WR in this draft..With the play of our backups at Oline

Yea, I could see that as well. It also depends on if Muhsin comes back next year or not. I could see us taking a guy like Benn, letting him learn behind Moose for a a quarter of the season before we start him. Moose would be our new Ricky Proehl #3 WR. We have the young stud WR in Benn, similar to Smitty was in our super bowl run.
