Troy Smith wants a trade.

I think Moore could beat anyone that we might bring in unless we sign a Tom Brady (which ain't happening). Just the fact that he knows the playbook, and is comfortable with the receivers gives him a leg up.

That being said, I fully agree that we should bring someone else in, but hopefully some rookie that we can draft and let him sit on the sidelines for a year or two. Troy Smith is going to want more money than we should pay him, especially considering that our third stringer is going to be making millions. :)

Folks here are missing the point.

Whether we`d be interested in him is likely irrelevant. I have my doubts he`d be interested in us.

Smith expected to be the starter for the Ravens a few years back. Instead, the job went to Joe Flacco. Smith`s desire for a trade now stems largely from that situation.

Under those circumstances, you can`t really blame him for wanting to go somewhere where he goes into camp as the anointed starter. And there are places that could offer that, but this isn`t one of them.

That`s not to say he wouldn`t get a fair shot here (I think he could) but if you`re Smith, why would you opt for a similar situation to the one that burned you before?

What place will give him that?

Most teams like there own guys or at least to draft them.

Saint Louis and Oakland are definitely in need, as is Buffalo. Cleveland could be too depending on what Holmgren thinks of the existing guys. Likewise the Redskins will have no real heir apparent if they let Campbell walk (which I expect they will). Add in Seattle as at least a possibility. Hasselbeck has declined and it doesn't look like Seneca Wallace is the answer.

There are definitely teams with an easier path to the starting spot than ours, and I'd say especially now with the Panthers starting to talk up Moore on site.

I would assume that Seattle and St. Louis would be at the top of list for him.

We on the other hand would not be. Buffalo could also be a possibility.

This isn't entirely true. He was the starter heading out of training camp but got hurt in the third preseason game and then Flacco took over. Once Flacco came out and played well, Troy's fate was sealed. Troy was out playing Flacco all throughout training camp and in the first two exhibition games.

That being said I want him. I love Matt Moore but I have a feeling that Smith could be very special if given the chance. Either way I would much rather he be on our team than anyone else's, plus the Ravens would only be looking to get a late round selection out of him anyways.

I think he's worth the late round selection. You're basically trading a late round pick for what's essentially a young QB with some NFL experience in camp and practice, etc.

It's like fast forwarding your draft choice. I say do it.

Even better, he's been groomed by one of the best QB coaches in the league in a system that isn't terribly different from ours.

yeah..But all those teams could just draft there own guys.

IMO..Matt Moore will have to compete with someone in TC I rather it be Troy Smith than Jake.

Even if some of the open places draft a 1st round QB, not all of them will. And as likely as not Smith could be traded before the draft.

To others: Again guys, you're mising the point.

Good pickup for us? Probably, but if you're Smith why would you want to come here to a place where you'd have to compete for the starting job when other places could offer it to you immediately?

I would take the chance of competing for a starting spot on a team that is going somewhere as opposed to being on a bad team that has a history of failure.

Because this team has a chance to win now

We're still a 500 team at best until someone proves otherwise, and we have no first round pick. Other teams can sell that with him, their first round pick and other acquisitions, they're poised for a comeback.

Add in that the Ravens might be looking for a better deal than what we'd be able to offer. Smith isn't in the same position as Peppers last season. He's a backup under contract, and isn't a proven player (still all potential).

He doesn't really have the leverage to force a trade, or dictate terms. Teams generally accomodate players (as long as it's not against their best interest) but they have no obligation to do so.

Realistically, the ball's in the Ravens' court, not his. And why shouldn't they get the best deal they can if there's a market?

(which there very well could be)

Sorry guys. Not saying it'd be a bad idea. Just saying I don't see it happening.
