i dont see how this is a good situation at all. even if we wanted to keep fox i would just go ahead and extend him now. no coach wants to operate under a 1 year trial basis. how is that good for continuity.

what happens if things go south?

will the player rebel knowing the coach wont be here next year?

what happens if he is one and done in the playoffs? do you extend him then?

what if he wants to leave? (Based on the posts of some , we would instantly become the oakland raiders and fox would be become belichek, tom landri, bill cowher all rolled into one and win 25 superbowls elsewhere.)

what if he sucks and then he leaves and we have to rework the staff ANYWAY with inferior coaching options? \

I'm more against passing up on Cowher than I am against letting Fox finish his contract out. This will be one frustrating offseason if this happens, especially if the Bucs pick him up.

edit: I didn't know Cowher's philosophy was take the team down with your struggling QB, voiding any chance of playoffs..

Actually, Cowher never had a really good QB until the end of his career when he finally drafted Big Ben. He put some below average passers out there and relied on his defense and running game for the vast majority of his Steelers career, believe it or not.

I'm curious...what does everybody think Bill Cowher's philosophy is? Aside from the 3-4 defense, it's exactly the same as Fox's, in case everybody didn't know that already. Yet, he is considered the savior of this franchise by most Panther fans.

I don't even want Cowher, but people arguing that he wouldn't be an upgrade over Fox are delusional.

Lets see.. Fox can't win back to back seasons, his teams crumple like wet tissue under any kind of spotlight or expectation, he needs to play the IR card every other season and he hasn't won a playoff game in how many years now?

What is the maddening thing about Fox, he's a good coach, but totally immune to change.

It's very hard to accept the bad along with the good, and view someone as a total package.

If you ask if Fox should be fired, most people might say yes, because he's not perfect, but when you substitute the name of a coach who might replace him, the numbers change. It's just human nature, the unknown is always more attractive, because you expect it to perform exactly as you wish it to, but it never works out that way.

Fox is a good coach, the best record the Panthers have ever had, but he could even be much better, if only he were a little more flexible, and more open to change. I guess that's what drives people crazy about him, he could be great, but won't take that final jump.

Cowher may be an upgrade and he may not, but if people are expecting wide open offense and blow out wins, they're mistaken. He's just as conservative as Fox, and it remains to be seen if he can duplicate his Steelers success somewhere else, so he's not a guaranteed upgrade at all, IMO....especially if he forces them to make the transition to a 3-4 defense. It will take some time to do that, for sure. I mean, look how long it took them to start to really run Meeks' system the right way, and that wasn't nearly as different as a 3-4 defense will be.

Because he won ALOT more than Fox. Had ALOT more winning seasons, had ALOT more playoff appearances. Thats why. Fox = Cowher lite. Some of us prefer to have the one with the philosphy that actually wins more.

It took Tampa to fire a great coach in Dungy to bring in Gruden to then win a Superbowl with the same team. That is what the Panthers need to do. Bringing in Cowher does not equal rebuild, it equals an upgrade.

Cowher also had some pretty crappy competition in his division for a lot of those years. Everybody seems to forget that part of the equation. And he did have some pretty mediocre teams in his 15 years.

Honestly, I wouldn't be totally against Cowher coming here though, but I do hate the thought of breaking up this defense. I think Meeks is doing a hell of a job. In fact, why shouldn't he get a chance to become the HC when Fox leaves? He's paid his dues in this league, and I believe the players would love to play for a guy like him.
