Moore compared to Brady's early career.

Now that Matt Moore has finished yet another great game, his situation reminds me of how Tom Brady took over the quarterback position for the Patriots organization. Following the injury to the supposed franchise quarterback, Delhomme for the Panthers and Drew Bledsoe for the Patriots, both players stepped in and led their teams with early wins.

Comparing Brady's stats from the year he took over (2001) to Moore (this year) the stats are very similar.

Brady's Starts

1: 13/23, 168 yards (44-13 Win)

2: 12/24, 86 yards (10-30 Loss)

3: 33/54, 364 yards, 2 TDs (29-26 Win)

4: 16/20, 202 yards, 3 TDs (38-17 Win)

Total: 820 yards, 5 TDs/0 int, and a 3-1 record

Moore's Starts

1: 14/20, 161 yards, 1 int (16-6 Win)

2: 15/30, 197 yards, 1 TD (10-20 Loss)

3: 21/33, 299 yards, 3 TDs (26-7 Win)

4: 15/20 171 yards, 3 TDs (41-9 Win)

Total: 828 yards, 7 TDs/1 int, and a 3-1 record

If the Panthers management can't realize what an opportunity they are being presented with when it comes to starting Matt Moore, they are completely blind. Loyalty to Jake or not, Moore's numbers speak for themselves.

I'm not saying here that Matt Moore is the next Tom Brady, however, it is not often a bottom rounder can post such great numbers and turn around a troubled team. I don't know what else you could expect for him to do to show that he is starting material. Starting Delhomme again would be a huge blunder, the organization needs to rally behind Moore, who is definitely looking like a diamond in the rough, and help him improve rather than attempting to salvage damaged goods with Delhomme.

It's way too premature to compare Brady and Moore in any meaningful way. Still, Moore is showing what he can do and I'm confused why a lot of stats & news sites keep saying that Delhomme is the presumed starter next season... If Delhomme starts and there is no QB competition, fans are going to riot. =|

Well Im still holding out my judgement on Moore till after next weeks game. If he puts up respectable numbers then I will give the nod and say kill the trade williams/stewart/peppers (if he wants to be here) thread because we no longer need a qb, we can get a 2nd wide reciever through the draft or FA (with no trades of valuable players), DT, and another qb through free agency/Draft (later rounds) for competition. Moore looks very promising and hopefully he will work hard in the offseason and come into camp ready to battle and improve and if he does this team will finally be where we all were hoping they should have been for so long.

No offense, but I think at this point even John Fox realizes that starting Matt Moore is the correct choice.

That is still to be seen...guess we will have to wait until August for the answer..:(

And Good Job :hurray: Mekeritrig, even though you might get some poo from this.

The point is that Moore is showing quite a bit of talent with little previous experience. Compare this to Delhomme who consistently failed while having a wealth of experience. The upside to Moore is far greater than Delhomme's. The organization's lukewarm support for Moore this season should definitely change. The longer the coaches hold onto the idea that there isn't a clear cut starter the worse the team will be for it.

Moore needs to be the established leader, and cutting his reps with the offense during the off-season in order to share with Delhomme and foster "competition" would be dumb. Look at the Browns this past off-season, neither of their QBs was given any definite support from the coaches and by the time the season started neither looked like they had enough preparation to lead their offense. QB competitions are a joke. Pick a player and give him the most reps as possible in practice in order to improve timing and trust with the offense as best as possible.

The post isn't comparing opinion he is comparing FACTS. The fact that Brady doesn't have to throw for 300yds every game to win is very meaningful. What I take from this is we have QB that can produce as required. He has thrown a buck 50 and he has thrown for 300yds. (299 but who's counting 1 yd)

Those of you that MUST have a drafted QB to run this team, you are wasting a pick. Our team has all the QB's we need.

Moore, McCown and Delhomme or Cantwell if we must severe the ties to Jake.

I personally believe if McCown is healthy going into the draft we cut ties with Jake and bring in Cantwell to be #3 QB. He has the Arm Strength and Size.

The ONLY way I draft a QB is if someone like Bradford fell in our laps.

Go Panthers

Go Panthers

Explain why not?

Brady was a 7th rd draft pick who stepped in for Bledsoe, played well and never looked back. And after the first 4 games they almost have identical stats. Plus Moore went against a top 2 defense in the Vikings and then played well in a hostile environment in New York

So you CAN make the correlation between the two. If he puts the time in and really works at what he has accomplished, he will only get better

thought i would beat the jake supporters/moore non-believers to the punch....

jake's first 4 games starting with the panthers:

game 1: 12/20, 122 yards 3 TDs, 2 INTs. (W 24-23)

game 2: 9/23, 96 yards 0 TDs, 2 INTS (W 12-9)

game 3: 17/27, 168 yards 1 TD, 0 INTs (W 23-3)

game 4: 15/23, 124 yards 0 TDs 0 INTs (W 19-13)

total: 510 yards, 4 TDs, 4 INTs, 4-0 record

stats weren't great but 4 wins is 4 wins. of course how much playing time did he get prior to this? remember he had the benefit of playing in NFLE.

how old was jake when he first got the starting gig? how old is matt?

matt is much greener than jake was when he first got the job but the truth is, he's doing a better job than jake did when he first started....at least he's doing his job better, anyway.

with jake, he was pretty much tapped out developmentally when he got here. it was all about the intangibles. there was a ceiling, though..and he hit it a couple times and we have seen 2009 as the year he plummeted down.

with moore, he still has a good deal of room for growth. he is coming to the table with more talent and a better skill set. give him more time with him as the starter and the intangibles he lacks will come.

one thing that brady had the benefit of was charlie weis installing the offense that the pats have been using ever since.

you get him to come here and take over the offense and you will have a lot more success from moore.

of course this isn't to say we shouldn't try to get a better QB in here but i think moore is definitely a step in the right direction and weis would make it even better (if we were going to be stuck with fox for another year, that is).

i love that we are not using 2007 stats, his actual 1st playing time to start. cherry picking in this thread people?

    • I'm not a fan for a couple reasons. You have to nail your 1st 2 picks, especially when you're lacking as much talent across the board as we were and you traded away the number 1 overall pick. Barring injury, they need to be immediate 4 year starters, and on this team, that's a pretty low bar to hurdle. I also really hated the FA strategy building up to the draft, particularly the guards, and the draft strategy itself. A strategy that focused on building around a QB that was so terrible he had no business being on the field. It was clear to pretty much everyone, BY wasn't ready to be an NFL starter. We dumped everything to build around him in the hopes he would become what we drafted him to be. And while the end of the year started showing some promise, we still don't know going into year 3 if he's going to live up to the hype. Dumping all your resources to build around a single player (and hope for the best) isn't as important as building a complete team.  If there's any certainty in drafting, it's HQ interior linemen are found in rounds 2-3, and even 4 pretty regularly. Dumping a ton of FA cash into those 2 spots didn't make sense when we have so many holes. Draft guards, pay tackles. It's one of the staple principles of oline building.  XL was always a project. He didn't have years of consistent high end performance in college. His hands are bricks, he body catches a lot, and he looks more like a 4th round receiver than a 1st. Maybe he improves, maybe not. He looked extremely raw as a rookie and we can only hope he might develop by the time his rookie contract expires. I'm always a fan of drafting guys that actually have hands coming out of college. Who cares if you can get open, or fight for the ball, when you can't actually come down with it consistently.  Then we get to Brooks. Taking a RB with a torn ACL who may or may not see the field in 24/25 over Zach Frasier, who already looks the vet at a position we've been severely deficient at since pre-injury Ryan Kalil. Relying on Corbett, coming off injury, to move from guard to center is never ideal, and the injury bug bit yet again, and we were scrambling trying to find someone to lead our 200m offensive line. And the worst part, we traded up to do it giving up 2 5ths to take Brooks when we're lacking talent everywhere.  Wallace, meh. Sanders looked good before that neck injury. But now we're into day 3 where expectations aren't extremely high for making the roster, unless it's the Panthers, but you can find some position players and rotational players to start plugging the Swiss cheese roster.  I give him credit for getting Coker as an UDFA and the trade for Jackson, but if that's the highlight of your draft, there's some serious problems with your drafting.  If we had saved the FA money spent on the guards, drafted JPJ and Frazier, and still been in pretty close to the same spot, better off cash wise (or spent on other FAs) going into FA this year. Coker ended up playing better than XL in less time. Brooks is Eric Shelton 2.0 right now. And we used 5 picks in the 1st 2 rounds, if you count those included in the trades. That's too much given up for a team that won 2 games the year prior. JMO, but I think the whole offseason strategy last year was flawed from start to finish.
    • Everything hinges on his ability to build through the draft so it's unknown until we see the upcoming draft class in action. That's all that will ultimately matter. We cannot afford anymore duds or projects especially in the early rounds.
