"He just had a bad year"

Read it until you can remember it because that could conceivably be the way John Fox is going to write-off Jake Delhomme's piss poor season.

Jake is only one year into a lucrative 5 year deal which is, to say the least, frontloaded. You know, it's a shame the way Matt Moore has played so well because he probably won't get to display his talents on the field for much longer, because, well, next year, come minicamp, Jake will be jogging out with the first team offense to complete a few effortless passes to woo the crowd and make many of the blind masses into misguided believers again. That is, until September comes around and he can't pass for more than 70 yards against fuging Seattle, and defensive backs are wondering if the ball that's falling into their lap was punted instead of thrown because that's how bad the arc on his floaters are.

Why? Because Jake is the golden boy. And Fox cannot put him on the bench permanently after only one year into this stupid contract because he had a few bad games. And didn't have some good ones? What about that comeback against the Redskins? Ain't no other QB than Jake can elude one of the most overrated CBs in the last decade and a terrible tackling defender for 8 yards and a third down conversion. And what about that second game against Atlanta? Jake throwing for 2 touchdowns and NO turnovers, and that's saying alot, because you know that formidable Atlanta defense really pressures the QB well.

So what if Matt Moore put together consistently good QB play. JAKE TOOK US TO THE SUPERBOWL 7 YEARS AGO! HE WON COUNTLESS GAMES FOR US! HE WON THEM. EVERYBODY ELSE JUST STOOD THERE AND PICKED THEIR ASS CRACK AND DID NOTHING TO HELP BUT JAKE. Matt Moore just put together a good performance for a few weeks and made the offense move the chains. So what? He's never won the game on the last play, or won a playoff game, so that automatically makes Jake the better option, right?

Shocking as it may sound this is a very plausible scenario. There are numerous, very realistic considerations to explain how Fox can really keep Jake in there over Moore:

1. The Money

2. He has a habit of keeping groceries in the fridge long after their expiration date has passed

3. The undying trust he has in Jake from all the times he's led fourth quarter game winning drives, and led the team to the playoffs and helped the team win playoff games, years ago, which is totally irrelevant to how capable he is today but that doesn't matter.

4. He's got the players' trust as well, even though he can't get the job done on the field.

5. We don't really ask much of him since this offense is built on the running game, this isn't Indianapolis, and we don't need a great QB to contend, or at least we believe we don't need one, even though it is a QB's league today.

6. A lot of the fans really love his charm and salt of the earth demeanor so they'll love the idea, and buy Fox's bullshit press conference statements.

All these factors and many more are reasons why Jake could be taking snaps under center next season, and Matt Moore, well, he'll be sitting on the bench or who the fug knows, maybe throwing it around in St. Louis while we take their second round pick in a trade to package it with our second rounder to move up in the late first and draft that linebacker from Texas Christian.

Maybe I am being an optimist about this offseason and going into the next. But if Jake is even on the team ( I really hope not) and starts to stink it up, JR has conveyed to him that his future as the Panthers head Coach rides with winning the Superbowl not just getting there. And Jake does not give us the best chance to do that. But that Moore does, so he had better make the change a lot quicker.

I don't think players really back Jake that much. Some players do. But that's because they want to believe in him because they've played with him so long and they are friends not just teammates. It's just the kind of players we have and honestly it is a good thing for the most part. But believe me they know how well Moore has done lately and they know Jake has struggled. Steve Smith is the same kind of guy I just described but ultimately you have to get the job done and win games and Jake wasn't able to do that or get Smith the ball. In comes Matt Moore and Smith is like the Smith of old and the whole team has a new intensity.

That's the thing that scares me to death about Fox. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, and trying to believe that he's going to learn from this(this season). It's just hard to trust him, especially when it involves Jake. The only reason I'm even leaning towards wanting Fox to stay, is Meeks and this defense. Fox and Meeks have fixed the D, and if Fox is fired I fear they'll get Meeks out of here. Hopefully, Jangler is right and JR is going to talk to Fox and rule out Jake playing at all. But, I seriously doubt that. Especially since I feel JR likes Jake just as much as Fox and Hurney. This would all be solved if they'd man up and cut him.

Jake is done as our starter unless Moore is injured imo. I highly doubt Fox will ever start Jake over Moore, unless Moore just starts playing incredibly poorly. So my prediction is that Jake is done as our starter. Should be interesting to see how things pan out. If Jake come out as our starter in 2010, then I'll transform into a raving lunatic. And I won't be alone, this forum will crash and burn in a blaze of rage.

To expand upon the "Money" point:

We as fans want to win. We have no major financial burden to bear on these players, no matter how many jerseys, framed 8 X 10s and fathead posters we buy, so we don't give a poo if a starter is benched. Here and now, Matt Moore gives us the best chance to win. But Matt Moore gets paid soybeans. He gets paid to be a backup. Jake gets paid millions, because he's getting paid to start, not to ride the pine. And in general, NFL owners don't want their money sitting on the bench. You want a prime example of that theory at work? Look at Bud Adams publicly suggesting to Jeff Fisher to put Vince Young out there in Tennessee. Though Collins’ cap hit is more lucrative than Young’s this year, over the long run the Titans have paid and will pay Vince more money. So while Collins is in there not moving the ball, they could be putting Young in there, the more youthful QB to get some experience and, lets face it, even before he’s helped the Titans to a 7-2 record following an 0-6 start, you could say the kid has potential.

Here's the part where I kind of feel bad for John Fox's position (that might surprise you.) If he keeps Jake in, he has to explain to the fans and the media why we're turning the ball over 5 times in a game and since one guy is responsible for most of it, and doesn't look good at all performing out there, why aren't we benching him, which, quite honestly, isn't that hard when you coach in Carolina and many people are still just glad we have a franchise, after 16 seasons.

On the other hand, if Fox benches Jake, he has to make sure it’s justified, because Jake is getting paid so much. If the backup QB doesn’t do so well, he’s got some explaining to do to the guy that actually writes Jake’s checks. This basically means Jake’s leash is freakishly long and Matt’s is short, so Jake can f**k up so bad, but you can’t pull that trigger so quickly because you just can’t trust Matt to justify benching Jake because his cap hit is so high, and if you do, so help you if Matt f**ks up once you better put Jake back in there.

You know whose fault it really is when this kind of situation manifests itself?

Sounds like the apocalypse for Panthers fans.

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!" I looked and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Delhomme, and Interceptions were following close behind him.
