Not to beat a dead horse... Our QB situation going into next year

There are plenty of threads on this but can someone on here with a better knowledge of our QB situation please breakdown what they think of our "4" QB's we currently have going into next year:

1. Jake Delhomme

2. Matt Moore

3. Hunter Cantwell

4. Josh McCown

5. AJ Feely (doubt he'll come back next year)

1. Does anyone think JM has any chance here to start and be efficient for us?

2. If Matt Moore plays well these last 2 games, has he earned the right to come into TC as the #1 guy. Barring we get a FA in the offseason

3. Hunter Cantwell? I mean what does this guy have that the Panthers like that kept him on the PS and now he has been promoted to the active roster as the #3 QB. Does he have any chance to the #1 QB next year

4. Jake Delhomme - what is the likely hood he actually comes into TC as the #1 QB and if not, do you feel Jake would retire if not the #1 QB

Lets assume that Foxy will come back if we end this season 8-8 because it would seem that may happen. I wouldn't be surprised to really see Weis in here next year with Fox as the OC. I feel like Fox would give him Cart Blanche with the offensive as Weis is a proven OC that can develop QB's and manage an offense effectively

Thoughts? Thanks and Merry Christmas

i admit i've been extremely skeptical about Matt Moore as a starting QB of the future, but if he plays like he played against the vikings, without the benefit of deangelo williams pounding things, he should absolutely be given a shot at QB1 in 2010. his deep passes are fairly accurate (hard to get worse than jake) and they're getting better now that he's had a few reps. if he can get a handle on some of those shorter passes in the flats and on out-routes (he seems to struggle with those in particular) he'll be extremely good.

i don't see mccown being kept if we get a new HC. delhomme, maybe, simply because he's got the contract, but ONLY in a backup role.

to me, 2010 is Matt Moore's make-it-or-break-it year. he's had a couple of seasons to learn the playbook, get reps with the starters, etc. if he doesn't excel next year, he's not really worth hanging on to... but i expect he'll do pretty nicely.

1. Josh has actually had plenty of starting opportunities with 31 starts under his belt. Whilst he has been bounced from team to team, he has not performed better than average in any of the opportunities he has been given. I just can't ever see him as a genuine starter, he just is not good enough. If we had zero options then he would be a suitable stop gap, but at the moment he is no better than Moore or Delhomme as the stop gap.

2. Unless he is lights out in the last two games he will still have to prove himself in training camp. He may start out practicing with the first team, but his position would not be locked up. Any QB out there will be licking their chops at getting involved with our team as the QB position is far from certain, so we could see our starter coming from anywhere. The big elephant in the room is...

4. Delhomme. I hate to admit it, but Fox being here next year will likely see Delhomme start if he is not released. I can see all eventualities, Fox fired, Jake cut, neither of those. All are feasible and all in some way make at the least a lil bit of sense. Someone on this board made a great comment about Delhomme. If he is ont he roster, it will be almost impossible for anyone else to win the job, as he is seen as the spiritual leader of the team. Whilst it would be great for him to be a back up, I just do not see how that logistically work, with his reputation, team support, Fox connection and massive contract. Delhomme will dictate the position, whether it's because he is released or retained.

3. Simply impossible to tell on Cantwell. I would expect they will try and get him on the practice squad next season regardless of pre-season, unless a better prospect falls to them. I would expect a free agent or draft pick to take the third spot on the roster.

In my mind, Feely and McCown are gone. they have both had opportunities in their careers and done little with them. They are the expereinced, yet cheap vet you want on your team 'just in case' or to just steady the ship for a season. If you have viable options, these two will never see the field.

Jake is a coin toss.

Moore will be tendered depending on his performance, he will be back though. It makes no business sense to let him go when you have him as a restricted free agent.

if moore plays well these last 2 games, he deserves a shot at being the starter next year. maybe he won't be the next matt cassell and have a good year this year then have a bad the next.

hunter cantwell has only seen playing time in the preseason for about 2 quarters total, and he did good while he was in.

mccown isnt that good and if im not mistaken is a FA this coming offseason. he is a solid 3rd qb though

and delhomme, most likely will be the backup next year and may retire because of that. if he is named the starter i wont watch a single game next season.

it woold be great to have weis as our OC. and if fox is fired, whoever the coach is that we get, would most likely want his own QB.

I don't think he even has to be breathing and he collects another 13 mill from the Panthers. Add in 6 mill to Fox and 4 to Hurney and the offseason house cleaning could be pretty damn expensive for JR

OUCH! You might as well keep the coach/GM, just for that. That is if they are finally smart enough to develop a QB...and give Matt Moore a shot, if he does well the rest of the season.

    • I want to throw in how much easier it is for a QB to develop and improve with a good oline.  Huge credit to the front office for spending the money on our two guards.  Cade Mays also had a 2nd really good game starting at center.  Love how he has developed and hope he's the real deal. Look at what Stroud is dealing with now in Houston after injuries and problems with their oline.  Strouds accuracy has been greatly affected as it seems like he doesn't trust his protection. Canales is doing a great job developing Bryce.  I think the QB whisperer might be for real. And obviously big props to Bryce.  First round pick that looks horrible in his first year.  Different coaches and systems.  Fans and media are calling him the biggest bust in NFL history and he looked like it in the first two games this year.  Gets benched.  Young man keep his cool and just continued to work and only worry about what he can control.  I hope things continue like this and we end up with a great success story. Bryce Young kept pounding.
    • Outside of Philly (who currently is #3 in pass defense) the rest of our remaining opponents are bottom 1/3 of the League in that regard.  Let's see what Bryce can do versus bad pass Ds.
