Gantt says we will let Dwill walk in 2010.

I have been thinking about this ever since we drafted Stewart. The way I see it is this...

RBs typically go downhill after they have about.....2000 carries in the NFL. LT was one of the most oft-used running backs in the league for about 7 years and started heading downhill last year after about 2400 carries.

Deangelo Williams has something like 750 carries TOTAL in his career. He is going to be amongst the best RBs in the league for the next 5 years assuming he averages about 250carries per season. There is no POSSIBLE reason for us to simply "let Deangelo walk."

Its a tough situation to be in but you don't just let one of the best players in the league go because his backup has had some good games. You just try to use the fact that you have a backup plan as leverage to get the best possible deal.

Until we have a QB that can carry us down the field without having to rely on one of our backs to get 5 yards per carry then we are going to need both of those guys.

sooner or later people will see...or better yet, admit that stewart and williams's talent level is the same.
Different skill sets. Williams is quicker to the corner and accelerates faster. He has better vision and is more elusive. He also is more likely to go down with the first or second tackle. Stewart is more a north south runner who is better between the tackles. He can go outside but gets caught more often before he reaches the edge. He can run though tackles better but has poorer vision and is less elusive.

They complement each other because they have different skill sets.

I wouldn't say it's the same but it's much closer than people here like to believe. It seems to me that Stewart is underestimated by the board. Williams has more skill, quicker feet and better vision but Stewart just has more prototypical raw talent, physically. They are very close. Stewart's performance Sunday night was one of the toughest RB outing's I've seen he can simply break so many tackles and he's just so damn powerful he's hard to bring down. Where as Williams has the best feet and acceleration in the league, no one quite moves like Williams does. He reminds me alot of Barry Sanders and Steve Smith he just doesn't have the top end like them.

You don't gamble on expectations when you have the real deal right in front of you.

Not much of a gamble imo based on Stewarts production from day 1. Odds are he will peak in the next few years like DeAngelo did last season. Williams is probably as good as he will get.....Stewart most likely will get better. I'm in favor for what makes the offense better overall.......one of these guys won't get a new deal and will be gone. I'm fine keeping either one.....I just want to be able to see something clear cut in return for letting one go.

i'm not disputing different skill sets, or the fact that they compliment each other.

different styles doesn't mean one is more talented than the other.

what i am disputing is williams being better than stewart. if the 2 of them were not on the same team, you'd see them ranked neck and neck amoung the nfl's RBs.

...and that's the dilemma that carolina has. if williams was so much better than stewart, there would be a clear cut choice for carolina. the fact that the run game doesn't skip a beat with either man carrying the load raises questions...and is the basis for the article.

Nope. Old. Sometimes I feel very old.

I feel your pain Mr. Scot. It's exhausting reading these threads where people constantly weigh in without even bothering with annoying little things like facts, and/or taking the time to find out what people actually said and/or wrote. Usually this is how every John Fox PC thread goes around here.

Stewart is great but he's a brute and I'm not sure he'll have as much longevity as D. Williams. Williams knows when to avoid contact, and that will give him more mileage down the road.

Probably true. But on the flip side, who's missed more actual game time this year?

Practice time? Stewart easily. Game time though? I'd have to check but I think it's Williams.

There's loads of variables in both situations right now. If all things work out, I'm sure the Panthers would prefer to keep both guys. But no one knows what'll happen, and it's likely to be pretty complicated.

If Stewart was number 1, I'm sure it would be Stewart too
