Yeah, I'm not willing to die for Scott Fitterer.

To quote Achmed the Dead Terrorist, I'd kill you for a Klondike bar.

Thing is though, I'm just not a "hot take" guy. I've watched out football seasons to know that what you think you know early on often proves very very wrong.

That's why I'm cautious.

Hurney was the most successful. Gettleman won with Hurney's players and was a stubborn bastard.

I think Fitterer does the best "day to day" job out of the 3. It's just that he worked with a coach that sucked. But he's the only one that seems to aggressively attack the needs of the team, get's the guys his coaches want, and drafts for need AND BPA.

2003, 2005 and 2008 were all SB caliber teams. Not saying Hurney was a great GM overall but you are really glossing over the fact he was the architect behind a very solid run in the mid- 2000's. You could also make the argument that the 2015 team was a Hurney product given the vast majority of star players were brought in by him.

If only he and Fox didn't have such a hard on for Delhomme and drafted a QB

Indeed. That's what we're working with. That's the sample size. We all hope it'll get better but we all hoped it would get better going into week two as well.

It was this same story throughout the preseason. It would be different come the regular season. Okay, so when? Not week one. Not week two.  When can a reasonable fan expect to see signs of a functional padding offense?

Functional? Maybe after the bye.

But this offense isn't going to be respectable with Frank Reich calling plays and this skill talent in 2023.  Frank is what he is and the skill talent is what it is.  Pending their isn't some miracle where someone tranforms quickly like a Mingo or TMJ into a vastly different player.  But the rest is what it is.  Hurst, Theilen, Chark, etc all are what they are.  And there just aren't good odds that Mingo or TMJ can make massive enough jumps to really alter things.

but I always thought pre bye it was going to be really rough.  Hope would for Bryce over coming some of it and growing down the stretch.  But that doesn't mean wins.  or even good offense.  Just good individual play in a meh spot.

For all the downing of hurney’s 2nd day picks (and they were bad), Fitterer has not been any better. TMJ is on par with Dwayne Jarrett, Corral is pickles or armanti Edwards. It’s just been nothing but a wasteland for Fitterer without the corresponding first round success that Hurney had.

Fitt is slightly hitting more than missing at FA but draft is a different story...

I don't like to compare drafts after the fact because it's all a crapshoot, but the Mingo pick and then aggressive trade up for DJJ (who's been inactive) is just not looking like the best strategy given the holes.

I would have loved to target a trade down from 39  (I.E. PIT had 48 and 80) given who was available, but no doubt, that needs a willing trade partner.

I just hate to see some draft crushes killing it right now.  Tuli is crushing it for the Chargers, Torrence in BUF, Mims in Denver, Spears has looked great for TEN, Byron Young in LA.

Best is Hurney, 2nd is Gettleman, 3rd is Fitterer. Hurney drafted most of the panthers legends of the last 20 years.

Not you specifically, yours was just the first one to make me want to respond.

I don't know if this is a Panthers thing, or not, but this weird obsession with "drafting star players" and absolutely caring more about the players than winning seasons is very strange to me.

Marty gave us a BUNCH of names to cheer on, and a BUNCH of losing seasons.  I'd rather not know a single player on the roster and win, than have TD, Luke, Olsen, Cam, CMC, Norman, Smith and Peppers out there losing season after season.

To add, as I got a bit distracted.  One of my closest friends in the world and I had this discussion at the last game we attended together.

We were talking about winning and what was going on with the Panthers.  I said that I wanted Marty run out of town on rails, and she was aghast.  "He's drafted all of my favorite players" was her rationale.

I asked her if she would rather win, or have her favorite players on the roster.....she wanted the players more than the W.

Very strange to me, but whatever.

Hurney was gold on 1st pick as everyone agrees...but when you pick top 10...a chimp could hit
that....
Gettledouch had some good stuff but handling of Norman and Smitty was terrible...led to 3 outta first 4 picks on DBs.
Fitt is supposedly known for digging out great talent in mid late rounds of draft but not really
seeing that come to fruition....

I also look at Hurney from a different cutoff point than others. Everyone compares the first and the second stint, but to me the tale of two Hurneys were the before and after the '08 draft

Before that draft, I would classify Hurney as a solid to good GM. He was putting together some solid teams that were unfortunately getting derailed by significant injuries. Then he traded for Jeff Otah and the wheels just fell off.

He extended Delhomme after his playoff implosion and then we got Tommy Jone Delhomme there after. '09 was probably the worst draft in the history of the franchise, especially when you consider we traded a future first to move up in the 2nd to take everette brown. '10 was also horrible because we didn't have a first for the second year in a row, then we ended up taking pickles and trading a future 2nd to move up in the 3rd for armanti edwards.

After assembling the team with the worst record in the league, he went on a spending spree and extended half of that 2 win team to bad contracts and investing WAY too much money into the RB position while the rest of the league was doing the opposite. We then drafted Cam which was a fantastic pick, but literally every other pick in that draft completely sucked.

'12 was probably the best draft Hurney had in years but he had already crapped the bed so many times over 4 years it was time to move on.

We brought him back and it was like nothing changed. Giving a RB a record breaking deal, overpaying for mid players and sucking at drafting in every round but the first.

Hurney from 02 to 08 - Good GM. Hurney from 09-20 with a break in the middle, bad GM; and The bad was significantly worse than the good

Pretty much.

We've seen almost this exact take more than once in this thread.
