Sorry kids, Jason Campbell is garbage

I have never seen the Redskins so pitiable.

It really isn't Campbell though.

If ever I felt sorry for a pro athlete it was Campbell last night. His Oline quit...granted some were backups, but, still...they flat out quit, on national TV...and Redskin coaches did not even do two tight ends, or keep backs in to keep Campbell from getting pummelled.

Bad, just bad.

People can bash those of us that want the Panthers to bring in Campbell, or T.Jackson, or other free agent QB and call us all kind of names - but; I could easily turn around and throw it right back at ya to want the Panthers to go into next season with Matt Moore as the annointed starter. Bringing in no other QB's besides a draft pick and just counting on Matt Moore would be just as shortsighted as giving Jake a extension after last season when he still had 1yr left on his contract.

The announcers pointed out these FACTS:

He's playing behind a patchwork line.

He has no supporting cast in the form of RB or WR right now.

He has had 7 different OCs in his 9 years of football (pro and college combined).

With that amount of chaos around him, he has done more than anyone on the Panthers roster could have done, and has still kept the Skins competitive... Check out the final scores of some of their games this year against higher ranked teams (not counting last night's debacle)...

There are NOT any better options next year over Campbell. Gruden said it best when he said that Campbell was a winner, and a good QB that's been in bad situations.

But continue to be blind... It's too bad for you because you will be pulling for him when he's in a Panthers uni.

sam I like you and all but you are not a flexible person at all. Do you ever change your mind on things or is everything you say right and everything everybody else says is wrong? Yes Jason campbell is behind a sh!tty oline. But does that make him good enough to start for us and take us to the playoffs? I doubt it. Jason does have the size, the arm strength, but his decision making is garbage at best. You need to come up with a better option for QB to put in your sig because Im not buying it. I think we should have moore compete with a second round qb and pick up a veteran to compete. That veteran should not be Jason Campbell IMO!!

That's my whole issue though Sultan...

There are no better options, at this point, to bring in...

With a draft pick, you're wagering a lot on one player. We have a second round pick, and little to trade that we are willing to part with to move up to take one of the higher rated QBs. Even with that sad fact staring us in the face, rookie QBs are big risks... Take a look at the stats/records of rookie QBs coming in and immediately starting over the past 10 years. Aside from the rare case (maybe 3 out of about 15), the team that drafted said QB has either moved on to another starter, or is continuously a sub-par contender...

One could even make the case that those teams that have been successful with rooks in the QB position have had stellar talent at other positions and strong defense...

I'm not saying the Panthers aren't on the verge of having a great defense (I actually think they are there at present), but we aren't coached at a level that would make the most use of that type of gamble...

We are a team who's identity since it came into the league has been to run the ball and play great defense...

Not only will that continue to be our mantra as long as Fox is in town, but also as long as Hurney is...

With 2010's CBA status up in the air, it would suit the Panthers best to stick to their guns and continue to be a run first team... The problem is we have to find someone to manage the game from under center. Moore may be the guy to do it. We just need someone who won't just heave it up and pray that it isn't a turnover.

Campbell has the experience, no matter how chaotic it has been, to be a successful QB, especially in a system that doesn't ask him to do a lot... At worst, he can be a gap filler until the talent pool in college football QBs fills up more, or we have other options via Free Agency... Should another veteran be cut in the offseason that I think provides us a better option than Campbell, then I'll lobby for him just as hard...

As it stands though, Campbell is the leading candidate in a pool that isn't very deep. A rookie is too big of a risk for the talent we already have on the roster. Why waste years developing someone who "could be" when we have the talent to be able to play it safe and make the most of it? Campbell even has the "could be" factor because he's still relatively young. Hell, let him and Moore compete with each other for all I care.

I just want us to have the best option at winning, and in my eyes, that is a QB like Campbell. He can make the few plays we ask of the QB, and he also has more mobility outside of the pocket than anyone who's ever worn a Panthers uni.

As far as decision making... It's hard to make decisions when you're out of options, have 3 seconds to make them, and have a different coordinator telling you what the better option is year after year.

I understand what your saying but I feel matt moore has the better chance. Yes maybe Campbell is a good idea to sign to get in and get some competition going. He doesnt deserve any kid of big contract, I am just saying that he reminds me too much of Jake Delhomme in the latter days. Lets see what happens because this offseason is going to be one rollercoaster ride with Fox on the hotseat and us wondering what direction we will be going.

That's really all I am asking for...

I agree he shouldn't get a huge deal, and that he should earn his keep...

Bring him in on a 3 year deal, let him compete in a stable/well defined offense, and see how it turns out...

I think our differences lie in the facts that I believe he will succeed in that type of situation - in turn earning a longer contract and making us a contender, while you believe he might fail and that it will leave us in our current situation.

The offseason is sure to be one to watch, and more interesting than Panthers offseasons of late...

We can continue healthy debate while we sit back and enjoy the ride.. no?
