The field goal that almost was

I was there and the first one didn't clear by 8 yards. Even if it had that doesn't mean the second one would. Special teams are awful and we already had an extra point blocked. You can't call something a bad decision when it didn't hurt us in any way. That is plain stupid.

taking up for a bad coaching decision is just plain stupid to me.

Perhaps Kasay said to him, "I don't have the leg anymore, coach."

Speaking of kickers, we were THAT scared of Harvin as a returner? I was at the game so didn't hear the play by play. Did they mention Lloyd and all his squibs?

Lloyd's tweet gave me the impression that he was supposed to squib it like that. They really didn't want a big Harvin return to spark them back into life.

There was mention in an Observer article this morning that Lloyd was told to squib the kicks to keep them away from Harvin. I don't remember much being said during the game about it. Coaches apparently trusted our Defense more than our Special Teams. :ihih:

Couldn't the 47 yarder get blocked as well?

Shorter the kick the higher the angle and yes most guys tend to kick a lower trajectory over 50 yards. It may be more psychological than anything but many kickers try to over kick the ball since it is over 50 yards while a 47 yarder seems to be in most kickers range. Yeah I know it is only 15 feet difference but at least that is what I have seen.

Stupid call. We had a better chance lobbing the ball up there for a touchdown rather rather than just attempting a long field goal with one of the best kickers in the league? No way...

Problem with your statement is.....Kasay is NOWHERE near one of the best kickers in the league.

He just does not have the leg anymore. Don't get me wrong...I love Kasay and what he has done for this team. However, he has missed alot of FG's this season (two short ones against Buffalo come to mind). We already have to carry Lloyd for KO's becasue of his leg strength.

There are way too many great kickers in this league that can handle both duties. I think this is Kasay's last season with the team and in the league.

You're right, he's 27th in the league in FG % @ only 77% this year.

Actually it made perfect sense. You look at the kicker before the game and based on the conditions you evaluate whether he can make the kick with no effort or not. At that point he barely made the 47 yarder and five yards was alot of distance in the extreme cold. If it gets blocked like the extra point, it could be potentially run back. It was as good a play to throw a hail mary as it was a field goal. Maybe Fox remembers how many times dumb plays at the end of a half or a game against Minnesota have doomed our team. Remember the sack and strip for a TD and Gamble's lateral on the kickoff return and it wasn't hard to figure out.

There's a gaping hole in your theory.

Kasay didn't "barely squeak it through".

He boomed it.

With PLENTY of room to spare.

John Fox is just a moron.

That's 3 lost points right there because Fox is a simple minded buffoon.

I disagree completely.

Once every couple seasons or so Kasay will have an absolutely abysmal game where he can't kick anything straight, but then will be fine for the rest of the season.(The Buffalo game this season, and his 3 misses against Philly a few seasons ago come to mind)

Kasay always bounces back.

He's still one of the best kickers in this league.

Saying we carry Rhys because Kasay can't get the job done is really taking away the credit from Rhys.

Rhys is a WEAPON.

He is by far the best kickoff specialist in the league, and you can't take that away from him.We are a field position team, and the desire to keep Rhys in addition to Kasay (not the other way around) is a reflection of that.

You guys kill me. We just played and destroyed one of the best teams in the league and you just have to jump on Fox for something. No way in hell do you risk kicking a 52 yard field goal when it is that cold and Kasay had just gotten an extra point blocked. This year he is 4-5 when kicking between 40-49 yards, he is 1-4 at 50+ yards and two of the 3 over 50 were blocked. What if it was blocked and ran back for a TD then Fox would have been stupid for kicking it. You can't risk something like that especially in a tight game like it was.

Kasay is not quite the kicker he use to be, and he has missed a few from 50+.. But he has missed only two field goals less than 50 yards all year. He is 4 of 5 from 40-49 yards. He is definitely among the best kickers in the league. It may be time to replace him due to the kickoff problems, but he is still among the best (most accurate) fg kickers in the league.
