I am probably coping a bit but the video sort of confirms what I thought I was seeing on Sunday in that the process is there, he's making reads & then decisions based off of those reads, yet the results were just not there. Perhaps on another day aka not his first freaking NFL game ever he'll be able to play at a higher level. I do like how JT pointed out there isn't a lot of improv yet from Bryce and yet that's a strength of his, I agree, and I do think that it'll come out more during this season when he realizes we need that part of his game to win. He's doing the pocket passer thing which is great to see and I think very encouraging but as JT notes, a lot of our first reads are to Thielen for some reason who is just slower than pondwater unfortunately. Rookie QB with these WRs is just going to be tough no matter how you slice it. I wish we had DJ here because he'd be feasting with Bryce.

The word that comes to mind for our offense right now is "Rhythm".

The rhythm is a work in progress between QBs and WRs. Bryce isn't a grip it and rip it QB like Cam was with a howitzer for an arm who can get the ball into the receivers hand in an instant. Bryce is more cerebral and relies on his knowledge of the playbook and brain to make up for the physical limitations. The NFL Game moves faster than college but I don't think it's too fast for him, he just has to adjust and get used to it. IF he and the receivers get into rhythm and on the same page we're going to see some good stuff. It's going to take some time though.

Haven't finished it yet, but hard to get through it.  I don't see anything encouraging.  Staring receivers down, misplaced/bad throws, suddenly little to no feel for anticipation, bad decisions, etc.

The sunshine and rainbows brigade keep wanting to cite it being his first game - outside of a couple of secondary players and maybe Grady Jarrett, the Falcons defense is ASS and Bryce looked horrible.  And again, outside of the injury AR looked better.  I think Stroud played better.  And we saw Cam dominate and take the league by storm from his first game on.  First game isn't an excuse, especially for a #1 overall pick.  You draft a guy #1 because they should step on the field and change the game in your favor from the first snap...

It's just very discouraging that every facet of his game that our staff felt made him the #1 overall pick over the other options are all areas he looked mediocre in for most of the game Sunday.

I just don't understand how you can have this ignorant of a take when there's overwhelming empirical evidence of elite QBs struggling in their pro debuts.  There was just a thread on it (see below).  Did all of those QBs step on the field and immediately change the game in their favor from the first snap?  Doubtful, considering there was another stat shared in here recently that QBs taken 1st overall were 0-13 in their Week 1 debuts.  Even Stroud who "played better" put up 9 points (less than Bryce) and 0 TDs...hardly game-changing.  According to your criteria, all of these guys were/should've been busts.

Lawrence in 2021 - 28/51 (54%), 3 TDs, 3 INTs, 332 Yards

Josh Allen in 2018 - 18/33 (54%), 1 TD, 2 INTs, 245 Yards

Deshaun Watson in 2017 - 12/23 (52%), 1 TD, 1 INTs, 102 Yards

Jared Goff in 2016 - 17/31 (54%), 0 TDs, 0 INTs, 134 Yards

Luck in 2012 - 23/45 (51%), 1 TD, 3 INTs, 309 Yards

Stafford in 2009 - 16/37 (43%), 0 TDs, 3 INTs, 205 Yards

Roethlisberger in 2004 - 12/20 (60%), 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 176 Yards

P. Manning in 1998 - 21/37 (56%), 1 TD, 3 INTs, 302 Yards

E. Manning in 2004 - 17/37 (45%), 1 TD, 2 INTs, 162 Yards

Matt Ryan had a good debut performance (albeit on 13 attempts and carried by Michael Turner), then the next week followed it up with 13/33 (39%), 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 158 yards.  Newton followed up his electric debut game with a 3 INT game.

Look, maybe Bryce Young isn't the answer.  I think he is, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

However, regardless of how he ends up, I feel as if some of you are wildly reacting to a "bad" Week 1 performance from him. Rookie QBs making their debut typically don't play well unless they have superb athleticism that they can rely on and that the play-caller can build around off jump.  Young can make plays outside of the pocket, obviously, but he largely lives and dies by making plays in the pocket.  Today he gave us plenty of reason to think that his football IQ is as good as advertised.  He was a willing and aggressive passer.  Even on his INTs, I'd argue he was making the right reads or at least we can see what he saw, he just didn't account for Bates breaking on the ball as fast as he did.  Stuff like that improves with times.  There is a reason rookie QBs tend to throw picks early in their career.

Again maybe Young isn't our savior but for a QB making his debut?  He didn't have a game out of the ordinary.  When you ask a rookie QB to throw 38 times with Adam Thielen as their best WR, well it probably won't lead to pretty numbers.

No! We must have elite play from day one or he is a bust!
I read it on the Huddle!

Na, I remember the good ole days when mods didn't have troll takes like yours in this thread.

Unlike most people, I really don't give a poo what strangers on the internet think of me or my opinion.  So unless the definition of trolling has changed, you're barking up the wrong tree.

It's true, he really doesn't.

I think I can count on one hand how many times I've agreed with Proudiddy of the years, but he's authentic and his opinions are genuine. He doesn't stir poo up just to stir poo up.

Agree on all that.

I'd add that size notwithstanding, Young is a damn near ideal fit for a WCO style attack.

Please stop listening to people bc they have a mic in their face, everybody is not qualified to break down high level football.

JT O'Sullivan is extremely qualified. I hope you are not talking about him with this comment...

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
