TV Sports Broadcasts in 4K (or not)

Merging some info from other threads, in case people were interested in what is (or more likely, isn't) available in 4K.

FOX and CBS only film NFL in a max of 1080p.

FOX broadcasts in 720p, while CBS broadcasts in 1080i.  

YouTube Sunday Ticket streams in 1080p

If you are watching the daytime NFL games in 4K, it's not because they were filmed in 4K, but that they were upscaled to the 4K level.

Amazon TNF will be in 1080p HDR this year (same as Apple's MLB streams)

ESPN has done native 4K filming of college games, but has not done native 4K for NFL yet.

NBC's SNF last night was in 1080p HDR

My cable or TV or something informed me when I switched to a college game this past Saturday that the game was available in 4k (with the option to switch to it) but as far as I know my TV isn't even 4K. I didn't give it a go.

Feels like it is right around the corner to be all major sports

if it's not filmed in 4k, then anything that airs in a 4k format has been upscaled.

For sports doing the actual broadcast / filming in 4k is technically difficult and also really expensive when you have 100 cameras.

and storage, and data pipes in questionably updated stadiums networks/cabling

Allegiant for the SB in Feb shouldn't have any infrastructure restraints, considering its newness. But it's not known if SB will be filmed in native 4k or not this year

Cabling and switchers are the main issue with how the filming and cameras are done. Going from 1080p to 4k requires 4x cabling and video switchers. 

 

They'd have to go from a 100 cameras down to 25 because of just the video switchers alone.
