Dubious distinction for John Fox if he returns to the Panthers next season

back to back winning seasons is overrated. look at a team like the colts who win 14 games a year, only one super bowl in the last 30 years to show for it. a team like the bucs have just as many and have had a plethora of losing seasons. the giants followed their super bowl with a first round playoff exit.

the patriots were a back to back winning team last year, but that didn't make them a back to back playoff team.

i wouldn't be surprised if we see two or three head coaches for the panthers before they go to the playoffs again.

what!! so winning is overrated. when did that happen? winning gives you a chance at the playoffs. once in the playoffs you get a chance at the superbowl. not winning gives a no shot. simple formula.

well there's 32 other teams that want to win and not all of them can have a winning record. Fox has had at least 7 wins in each season as Panthers head coach and that's one win away from a .500 record. from 2005-2007 his record was 19-13 with a 11-5 season then an 8-8 season, 8-8 season is one win away from a winning season.

is sean payton's job in jeopardy? he's coming off of two straight losing seasons. two straight losing seasons with a top 3 NFL QB.

imagine that guy with jake delhomme.

Since 1990, only six of the 73 first-time head coaches remained with their original team for eight-or-more years: Reid (since 1999), Tennessee’s Jeff Fisher (since 1994), Brian Billick (1999-2007 with Baltimore), Bill Cowher (1992-2006 with Pittsburgh), Dennis Green (1992-2001 with Minnesota) and Tom Coughlin (1995-02 with Jacksonville).

quoted from wikipedia. Fisher didn't make the playoffs until his 6th season as head coach. probably looked like a good decision to let him go back in 1998, but in 1999 he led the Titans to the Super Bowl.

Get a real NFL QB. McNabb and McNair obviously had a lot to do with Reid and Fisher having their jobs so long.

you were saying it as if you dont need to have back to back winning seasons to be a good team. you can suck for years luck into one superbowl then suck the rest of the years. how about teams like the steelers or pats they starting getting superbowls and putting up consecutive winning years. ask any playing if back to back winning seasons is over rated.

JR is 73 years old. Let me repeat that, JR is 73 years old. I highly doubt he has any more patience with Fox when considering his age and him wanting a ring before he dies.

well al davis is over 200 years old and he makes dumbass moves all the time...

yeah winning every year would be nice. is it realistic to expect that though? you should be more grateful for the overall winning record Fox has had as Panthers head coach is my point and he's shown he can rebound from losing seasons. it's like 90% of you guys ignore everything in the NFL and look at the Steelers, Patriots, Colts and a few other select teams and whine about how we're not them. well that's the reality of any sport. All those teams have hall of fame quarterbacks too.

soooo....who's fault is it that we don't have a real NFL QB?

Delhomme is the best QB the Panthers have ever had and Fox brought him here. Fox definitely takes some blame for the Panthers not having a longterm option at QB but he isn't a coach/GM. Hurney also is to blame. The fact that we've been a franchise form 13-14 years and Delhomme is the best we've ever had even makes me put some blame on Richardson.

overall record doesn't mean jack.

by the time this season is done fox will have had only 3 winning seasons out of 8.

sorry, but that isn't quite good enough.

i don't want this team to be just better than the browns. i don't want this team to be average. i don't want this team to be just above average (which we aren't). i want this team to be the best. those who are on top are that way because they didn't settle for what the panthers have settled for. the panthers have not been a winning team overall. they do not come out year after year and put together a winning season.

is it realistic to expect that your team wins every year? yes. teams that accomplish it, the teams that are on top year after year, expect that of themselves. they set the bar high and do whatever it takes to get themselves there. there isn't any of this "21 of 22 returning" garbage. they look for weaknesses and try to improve them every year. they aren't content with weakness. they don't accept it the way the panthers have.

yes, this team need a much better QB. they need a lot more, though. the biggest thing is leadership. they need someone who isn't going to be content with being 'okay' or 'pretty good' but someone who will accept nothing less than excellence. any coach who shoots for 3 wins out of every 4 games is not shooting for excellence.

it doesn't matter what QB you bring in here as long as fox is HC. what you are going to get is an underachieving team who occasionally does pretty good and then thinks that they really don't have do change much. the bar will be set low and the team will do just enough to reach it, sometimes.

i agree there are shortcomings and 3 of 8 is mediocre, i only come to Fox's defense because it seems a large majority feel he must be fired. his job should be in question and pressure should be on, but i honestly could see JR going either way at this point. Belicheck lost 5 of 6 seasons with the browns and they let him go. sometimes a coach needs more power or they need to learn more from other coaches before they can improve any further.

i'd hate to see fox winning super bowls with another team though.

either way though, i'm a panthers fan, i'll be rooting for whoever is coaching and whoever is playing and hopefully whatever decision JR makes it'll be the one that is best for the team.
